Raw Brass, Built to Earn Its Own Patina
The Wellington Grand Post Lantern in Raw Brass starts life bright and golden, then does something the other finishes cannot: it changes. Left to the weather, raw brass slowly darkens and develops its own patina, so the lantern on your gate post in a year or two will look quietly different from the one you unboxed, and better for it. If you like the idea of a fixture that ages with your house rather than staying frozen in time, this is the finish to choose.
How It Works
This is solid brass construction, valued outdoors precisely because it shrugs off the corrosion that would ruin lesser metals near the coast. A clear ribbed glass diffuser softens and spreads the light from a single ES/E27 lamp (not supplied), and the fixture is LED compatible for anyone who wants a cooler running, longer lasting bulb. It carries an IP54 rating against rain and spray, is wired as a Class 1 fixture so it needs an earth connection, and the cable feeds in through the base so nothing is left exposed to the elements.
Where It Works Best
As the largest lantern in the Wellington range, this one is built for driveways, gate piers and grand entrances rather than a modest side door. Raw Brass in particular suits seaside cottages, farmhouses and older properties where an evolving, lived in look feels right, and it rewards patience: the salt air that would trouble other metals is what gives this finish its character over time. Compare it with the Antique Brass version, which gives you that same aged warmth from day one with no waiting, or the Satin Nickel option, which stays a consistent cool silver and never develops a patina at all.

Questions People Ask
Will the Raw Brass finish change colour once it is installed outside?
Yes, that is the point of choosing it. Raw Brass is unlacquered, so weather and salt air will gradually darken it and build a natural patina over time.
Is this post lantern strong enough for a property right on the coast?
Yes. Solid brass construction and an IP54 rating make it well suited to salt laden coastal air, and the raw finish is designed to weather rather than corrode.
What lamp do I need for the Wellington Grand Post Lantern?
It takes a single ES/E27 lamp, not included, and accepts LED lamps if you want lower running costs alongside the classic look.
