The Grand Capstan, Straight From the Foundry
Raw brass has a very particular kind of honesty to it. Nothing has been lacquered over or dulled down, so what you are looking at is the metal in its rawest working state, the same warm gold tone shipwrights would have known on deck fittings and portholes. Left to the weather, this finish will soften and darken in its own time, taking on a mellow, freckled patina that no two fittings will wear quite the same way. If you like the idea of a light that changes character the longer it lives on your wall, this is the finish built for exactly that.
How It Works
The Grand Capstan Bulkhead is built around a solid brass body finished with a thick, ribbed prismatic glass diffuser, the same radial pattern that gives the range its name and its wider spread of light than a plain porthole lens. It is rated IP64, so splashing water and driving rain are no trouble at all. Inside, it takes a single E27 lamp, up to 18W, and is happy running on a dimmable bulb if you want to bring the level down for evenings outdoors. Cable entry can be made through the side or the rear of the fitting, and a brass blank is included to neatly seal off whichever gland entry point you do not use.
Where It Works Best
Raw Brass suits properties where a bit of ageing is part of the appeal rather than something to avoid, think weatherboarded coastal cottages, boathouses, harbour walls and garden entrances where the light will be seen up close over years. Because it is unlacquered, it will always look slightly different a year from now, which is part of the charm. If you would rather the fitting kept a consistent tone from day one, the Antique Brass version arrives already aged, while Satin Nickel gives you a cooler, unchanging finish for a more contemporary coastal look.

Questions People Ask
Will a Raw Brass outdoor light like this tarnish outside?
Yes, and that is the point of choosing Raw Brass. Left unlacquered, it reacts naturally to air and salt in coastal air, gradually darkening into a soft, uneven patina rather than staying bright and polished.
What bulb does the Navigator Grand Capstan Bulkhead take?
It takes a single E27 lamp rated up to 18W. The lamp is not supplied, so you can choose the colour temperature and brightness you prefer, including a dimmable bulb if your circuit supports it.
Is this light strong enough for a fully exposed coastal wall?
With an IP64 rating and solid brass construction, it is designed to cope with wind driven rain and salt laden air, making it a practical choice for coastal facing walls, porches and boathouses.
