The Merchant Bulkhead, Left Raw and Unlacquered
Raw Brass means exactly that, no lacquer, no artificial ageing, just bare metal left to do what brass has always done outdoors: darken, mellow, and pick up its own character wherever it hangs. Fit it today and it gleams like a freshly polished ship's fitting; leave it through a few seasons of coastal weather and it will slowly deepen into a warmer, more textured tone entirely its own. This is the version for anyone who likes watching a fixture develop a story rather than buying one that is already finished.
How It Works
The oval bulkhead body is solid brass, tough enough for the corrosive air that ruins painted or plastic fittings near the coast. A single ES/E27 lamp (not included) sits behind a clear ribbed glass diffuser that spreads the light evenly rather than glaring straight out. You can bring the cable in through a gland at the end or the rear of the unit, whichever suits the wall it is going on, and a brass blank is supplied to close off whichever entry you do not use. It carries an IP64 rating for outdoor use, and is held together with Phillips head screws rather than wing nuts, a straightforward touch against tampering.
Where It Works Best
Raw Brass suits anyone happy for a fixture to weather naturally, boat sheds, harbourside walls, gardens near the sea, or simply a porch where you want the metal to age alongside the building around it. Where Antique Brass gives you that lived in look from the first day and Satin Nickel gives a cooler, more formal finish, Raw Brass is the one that changes the most over its lifetime, so pick it if you actually want that gradual patina rather than a fixed, permanent look.

Questions People Ask
Does Raw Brass need polishing to stay looking good outdoors?
No, part of the appeal is letting it change on its own. Left alone it will darken and develop a natural patina; if you prefer the original brighter tone you can polish it back, but there is no obligation to.
How long before Raw Brass starts to darken outside?
It depends on how exposed the wall is to salt air, rain, and sun, but most owners see the first hints of ageing within a season, deepening gradually from there.
What bulb does the Merchant Bulkhead in Raw Brass take?
A single standard ES/E27 lamp, which is not included, so you can choose the colour temperature and brightness that suits the space.
