The Vernon Raffia Pendant takes its cue from traditional basket weaving, its wide 98cm shade built from bands of natural raffia in two contrasting tones that alternate around the frame in a bold stripe. Rather than a single flat colour, the finished shade has real depth and movement, with each row of fibre catching the light slightly differently. A slim brass frame holds the raffia in place and the whole fixture stands just 19cm tall, so its presence comes from its generous width rather than its height. It arrives with 1m of cable, ready to be hung at the drop that suits your room.

How It Works

Light from a single 40W E27 bulb filters outward through the gaps in the raffia weave, so the striped pattern is thrown gently onto ceilings and walls rather than staying flat on the shade. The two tone banding means the light picks up subtle variation as it passes through, warmer in places and softer in others, which gives the pendant a natural, textured glow rather than a single even wash. Fit a dimmable bulb and you can take the light from a bright everyday level down to something much quieter in the evening.

The Story Behind Mullan

Mullan Lighting began in 2009 when architect Mike Treanor took on the restoration of a derelict nineteenth century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. What started as one building project grew into a lighting studio that now employs more than 100 craftspeople and sends its designs to over 55 countries. Alongside the ceramic pieces the studio is known for, Mullan has spent recent years exploring other natural materials, and this raffia collection is part of that ongoing work, bringing a handcrafted, organic feel into contemporary interiors.
