Mullan Sakura Wall Light - Black Clay with Finish Options

Black Clay: A Twin Bulb Wall Light With Material Depth

The Sakura Wall Light in Black Clay is a 29cm tall, 11cm wide handmade ceramic wall fitting with a distinctive twin E27 bulb configuration that gives it a presence and output that single bulb wall lights cannot match. The deep, matte authority of the black clay finish is applied by hand at Mullan Village, County Monaghan, and fired on site, preserving the natural surface texture and variation of the clay. At 18cm projection it sits confidently on the wall. The twin bulb configuration allows for a brighter, more balanced spread of light across the wall surface while the ceramic shade does the visual work above it.

How It Works

The Sakura Wall Light takes 2 x E27 bulbs, directed outward and downward through the ceramic shade. The twin bulb configuration creates a broader, more even distribution of light across the wall and into the room than a single bulb fitting of the same size. Both bulbs should be the same type and wattage. A warm white dimmable E27 LED is recommended for both sockets.

Where It Works Best

The Black Clay Sakura is well suited to living rooms, dining rooms, hallways and bedrooms where a wall light with genuine material authority and a higher light output is wanted. The twin bulb setup makes it particularly effective in larger rooms where a single bulb would feel insufficient. It pairs particularly well with antique brass, aged timber, dark stone and warm woven textiles.

The Story Behind Mullan

Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. The black clay finish draws from the iron rich soils and ancient bog landscapes of that part of Ireland. Over 100 craftspeople work at the studio and every piece is made to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass.

FAQs

Why does this wall light take two bulbs?
The Sakura takes 2 x E27 bulbs, both directed through the same shade, giving a brighter, more even light output than a single bulb fitting. This makes it particularly well suited to larger rooms or anywhere a higher light level at wall height is wanted.

Do both bulbs need to match?
Yes. For consistent light output and to avoid uneven illumination or interference between bulb types, use the same type and wattage in both sockets. A matched pair of warm white dimmable LED E27s is recommended.

Is this suitable for a bathroom?
The Sakura Wall Light is IP20 rated and suitable for dry indoor areas only. It is not certified for bathroom wet zones.

Can I use dimmable bulbs?
Yes. Compatible with dimmable E27 LED bulbs. Ensure your dimmer switch is rated for LED use. Bulbs not included.

Can I return it?
No. Every Mullan light is made to order, so it cannot be returned unless it arrives faulty or damaged. If anything is wrong when it arrives, please contact us as soon as possible.
