The Mullan Rivale Wall Light in Red Iron is a fitting for people who want their walls to say something. The ceramic shade carries a rich, earthy red iron finish that is hand painted in the ceramics studio at Mullan Village, County Monaghan, Ireland, with the tones varying naturally across the surface in a way that no factory process could reproduce. The finish draws its inspiration from the iron rich soils and weathered stone of the surrounding Irish countryside, and because each shade is individually formed and painted, every piece that leaves the kiln has its own particular character and warmth.
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who took on the restoration of a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village as both a business and a community project. The ceramics studio that grew within that mill was developed with ceramicist Stephen Kieran, whose approach to ceramic finishing centres on celebrating the natural properties of clay rather than concealing them. The resulting collection of finishes, of which Red Iron is among the most expressive, has become the signature of a brand now exporting to more than 55 countries. Over 100 craftspeople work at the studio today, producing lights made to order for clients ranging from private homeowners to some of the world's most prestigious hotels.
Positioned in a bedroom the Rivale Red Iron wall light creates an atmosphere that is warm, intimate and completely free of the clinical quality that mass produced fittings can carry. In a living room or dining space it adds depth and drama to a wall in a way that ceiling lights cannot replicate. The red iron finish works particularly well alongside natural timber, aged brass, terracotta tiles, dark painted joinery and warm stone surfaces, making it a natural fit for interiors with a strong material identity.
