Blue Earth ceramic has a quality that changes with the light. In the morning it reads as a deep, saturated teal. By evening, with a warm bulb behind it, the tones shift towards something closer to indigo. The Mullan Rivale Wall Light in Blue Earth captures this quality beautifully, with each shade hand painted in the ceramics studio at Mullan Village, County Monaghan, Ireland, in a finish that is inspired by the colours of the Irish landscape — the deep greens and blues of its fields, sky and water. The variation inherent in the hand painting process means every piece is unique, carrying its own particular depth and character.
Mullan Lighting has been handcrafting lights in Mullan Village since 2009, when founder Mike Treanor began the project of restoring a derelict 19th century flax mill and building a world class studio within it. With ceramicist Stephen Kieran shaping the ceramic collection, the brand developed a range of finishes designed to echo the natural world surrounding the village, and the Blue Earth finish remains one of the most popular expressions of that vision. Over 100 craftspeople now work at the studio, and Mullan's handmade ceramic lights are found in homes, hotels and restaurants in more than 55 countries worldwide.
As a wall light the Rivale Blue Earth works particularly well in bedrooms, living rooms and bathrooms where its calm, aquatic tones reinforce a sense of tranquillity and space. Positioned beside a mirror in a bathroom it adds both practical light and a touch of artisan craft to an often overlooked space. In a living room or bedroom it creates a layered lighting effect that overhead lights alone cannot achieve, and the blue earth finish pairs naturally with natural stone, pale timber, brushed metals and soft white or grey walls.
Available with a choice of glass shade options and metal fittings including antique brass, antique silver, matte black, polished brass and satin brass. Each piece is made to order in Mullan Village using sustainable clay and recycled brass components, with a lead time of approximately three weeks.
