Black Clay and Glass — A Wall Light With Genuine Material Depth
The Rivale Wall Light in Black Clay brings the deep, matte intensity of the black clay finish to a side-mounted wall fitting with a choice of clear, frosted or opal glass. The ceramic shade is formed and hand painted at Mullan Village, County Monaghan, the black clay surface absorbing light rather than reflecting it and giving the fitting a quiet, grounded presence that painted metal simply cannot achieve. Because every shade is painted by hand, no two are ever precisely the same. The shade faces outward and slightly downward, the glass and ceramic combining to create a quality of light that shifts depending on your glass choice.
How It Works
The G9 lamp sits inside the glass shade. Clear glass gives the most defined, directional light with the black clay ceramic reading boldly from the front. Frosted glass softens the spread and reduces glare, creating a warmer ambient wash. Opal glass gives the most even diffused glow and creates a striking contrast — the deep black ceramic against the soft white glow of the lit glass. In all three cases the deep matte black absorbs the light rather than reflecting it, adding material depth at the wall surface.
Where It Works Best
The Black Clay Rivale Wall Light is a strong choice for bedrooms, living rooms and dining spaces where a wall fitting with genuine material authority is wanted. Either side of a headboard it creates a considered bedside lighting arrangement that frees up surface space. In a dining room it adds drama and warmth at the level where the light can be appreciated directly. The black clay finish is particularly effective against white or off white walls, pale stone, warm timber and polished or antique brass hardware.
The Story Behind Mullan
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. The black clay finish draws from the iron rich soils and ancient bog landscapes of that part of Ireland. Over 100 craftspeople work at the studio and every piece is made to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass. The studio distributes to more than 55 countries.

Which glass works best with the Black Clay finish?
Opal glass creates the most striking contrast — the deep black ceramic against the evenly glowing white glass is particularly effective in rooms with pale walls. Clear glass keeps the look more graphic and direct. Frosted sits between the two and works well in most room types where a softer, warmer light is wanted.
Will my wall light look exactly like the photo?
Close but not identical. The black clay finish is hand applied and fired so surface texture and depth of tone vary naturally between pieces.
Is this suitable for a bathroom?
The Rivale Wall Light is IP20 rated and suitable for dry indoor areas only. It is not certified for bathroom wet zones.
Can I use a dimmable bulb?
Yes. Compatible with dimmable G9 LED bulbs. Ensure your dimmer switch is rated for LED use. Bulb not included.
Can I return it?
Yes. Returns are accepted within 14 days of delivery provided the item is unused and in its original packaging. Please contact us to arrange.
