Wall lights in ceramic are a relatively rare thing, and the Mullan Rivale Wall Light in Black Clay is a reminder of why that matters. The ceramic shade carries a deep, matte black finish that is dense and rich in a way that painted metal simply cannot achieve. It is a finish born from the clay itself, hand applied in the ceramics studio at Mullan Village, County Monaghan, Ireland, and fired until it takes on that characteristic depth that makes each piece feel like something found rather than manufactured. And because every shade is painted by hand, no two are ever precisely the same.
Mullan Lighting was established in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who transformed a long abandoned 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village into a world class handmade lighting studio. The village traces its name back to muileann, the Irish word for mill, and that heritage of craft and community is embedded in everything the studio creates. The ceramic collection draws its colour palette and textural inspiration directly from the landscape and historic buildings surrounding the village, with each piece made to order and fired on site. Mullan now employs over 100 craftspeople and exports to more than 55 countries, with a client list that includes some of the most prestigious hotel and restaurant groups in the world.
The Rivale Black Clay wall light is a strong choice for living rooms, bedrooms and dining spaces where you want a fitting that adds both light and visual weight to a wall. Positioned either side of a headboard it creates a sophisticated bedside lighting solution that frees up surface space on bedside tables. In a dining room it adds drama and warmth at a level where the light can be appreciated directly. The black clay finish is particularly effective against white or off white walls, pale stone, warm timber and polished brass accents.
