Red Iron — Earthy Warmth That Cannot Be Manufactured
The Rivale in Red Iron is a pendant with a finish that earns its place in a room through material depth rather than novelty. The iron tones — ranging from warm terracotta at the surface through to deeper rust and ochre within the glaze — are hand applied at Mullan Village and fixed through firing in a process that preserves natural variation across the surface. No two pieces come out of the kiln looking identical. Paired with your choice of clear, frosted or opal glass, the red iron ceramic interacts with the passing light in ways that shift throughout the day, giving you a pendant that feels genuinely alive rather than static.
How It Works
The G9 lamp sits inside the glass shade. Clear glass gives the most direct, focused pool of light and keeps the red iron ceramic visible from outside the shade — the warm tones of the ceramic catching at the glass rim and adding depth to the light. Frosted glass softens the spread and reduces contrast, creating a warmer, more ambient effect in the room. Opal glass diffuses everything evenly and disguises the bulb, letting the red iron shade itself become the visual centrepiece. In all three cases the earthy tones of the ceramic respond beautifully to warm-spectrum LED bulbs.
Where It Works Best
The Red Iron Rivale is a natural above a dining table where its warmth creates an atmosphere that makes a meal feel like an occasion. It works equally well in a kitchen with natural stone or timber worktops, a living room with an earthy neutral palette, or a bedroom where depth and character matter more than cool simplicity. It pairs particularly well with antique brass, aged timber, terracotta surfaces, dark stone and warm woven textiles. If your interior leans into natural materials and warmth, the red iron finish will feel completely at home.
The Story Behind Mullan
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a long-derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. Ceramicist Stephen Kieran developed the red iron finish as a direct response to the iron-rich soils and weathered stone surfaces of the County Monaghan landscape — a finish that carries the specific character of the place where these lights are made into the rooms they eventually inhabit. The studio employs over 100 craftspeople and distributes to more than 55 countries. Every piece is made to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass.

FAQs
Which glass works best with the Red Iron finish?
Clear glass allows the full warmth of the red iron ceramic to show from outside the shade and casts the most defined light below — good for dining tables and kitchen islands. Opal glass softens the look and lets the warm earthy tones of the ceramic glow from within, which is particularly beautiful in the evening. Frosted sits between the two and works well in rooms where some ambient softness is wanted alongside the directional light.
Will my pendant look exactly like the photo?
Close, but not identical. The red iron finish is hand applied and fired, so the depth of colour and surface texture vary naturally from piece to piece. The tones will be consistent — warm terracotta through to rust — but the specific character of your piece will be its own.
Can I use a dimmable bulb?
Yes. The Rivale works with dimmable G9 LED bulbs — make sure your dimmer switch is also rated for LED use. Bulb not included.
