The Mullan Rivale Pendant in Black Clay is a handmade ceramic and glass pendant with the deep, matte authority of the black clay finish combined with a choice of glass shade that brings additional light quality and visual refinement to the fitting. The ceramic body is formed and hand painted at the studio in Mullan Village, County Monaghan, Ireland, with the deep matte black finish preserving the natural texture and surface variation of the clay through the firing process. Paired with clear, frosted or opal glass, the Rivale becomes a pendant of genuine visual complexity — the ceramic body providing material depth and the glass diffusing or directing the light in a way that the ceramic alone cannot achieve.
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village and built a ceramics studio that now employs over 100 craftspeople. The black clay finish draws from the dark, iron rich soils of County Monaghan and the Rivale pendant range pairs this with glass shade options for pendants with greater visual depth and light quality control. Every piece is made entirely to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass, and the studio exports to more than 55 countries.
