Black Clay and Glass — A Pendant With Genuine Depth
The Rivale in Black Clay is one of the most considered pieces in the Mullan ceramic range. The shade is thrown and hand painted at Mullan Village, County Monaghan, then paired with your choice of clear, frosted or opal glass — three very different outcomes from one ceramic body. Clear glass keeps the light focused and the look graphic. Frosted softens the spread. Opal gives you the most diffused, even glow. The black clay surface absorbs and plays with light rather than reflecting it, which means what you see shifts through the day in a way that a painted or manufactured shade never does.
How It Works
The G9 lamp sits inside the glass shade, which means the light quality is determined by which glass you choose at checkout. Clear glass throws a more direct pool of light beneath the pendant — good above a dining table where you want the light to land on the surface. Frosted and opal glass scatter the light more gently around the room, softening the contrast between the lit pendant and its surroundings. The ceramic body itself glows warmly at the edges where light catches it, which adds a depth that plain metal or glass pendants cannot replicate.
Where It Works Best
A single Rivale Black Clay works well above a bedside table, in a hallway, or as a statement piece in a reading corner. Group two or three above a kitchen island or dining table for a scheme that feels considered rather than matched. The black clay finish sits confidently alongside pale and dark walls alike, and it pairs particularly well with antique brass, aged timber, dark stone and warm woven textiles. If your interior already has a lot of warmth and natural material, the black clay adds visual anchor without competing for attention.
The Story Behind Mullan
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who took on the restoration of a long-derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. The village name comes from muileann, the Irish word for mill, and the studio Mike built there now employs over 100 craftspeople. The ceramics collection was developed with ceramicist Stephen Kieran, whose approach centres on working with clay's natural properties rather than standardising them away. The black clay finish draws directly from the iron-rich soils and ancient bog landscapes of County Monaghan. Every piece is made to order and exported to more than 55 countries, including some of the world's most recognised hospitality venues.

FAQs
Which glass should I choose?
Clear glass gives the most focused, direct light and the crispest look — good if you want the light to land on a surface below the pendant. Frosted glass softens the spread and reduces glare, which works better in rooms where the pendant will be at eye level. Opal glass gives the most even, diffused glow and disguises the bulb completely — best if you want the shade itself to be the feature rather than the light it casts.
Will my pendant look exactly like the photo?
Close, but not identical. The black clay finish is hand applied and fired, which means the surface texture and depth of colour vary naturally from piece to piece. No two Mullan ceramics are the same, which is part of what makes them worth having.
Can I use a dimmable bulb?
Yes. The Rivale is compatible with dimmable G9 bulbs — just make sure your dimmer switch is also rated for LED use. The bulb is not included.
