The Rivale Ceiling Light in Blue Earth brings the same layered, hand-painted ceramic quality as the pendant range to a wall-mounted ceiling fitting — the form for spaces where a hanging drop is not practical but where you still want something genuinely beautiful overhead. The blue earth ceramic shade sits close to the ceiling and faces outward and down, with the layered teal and ocean tones reading as cooler and more aquatic in natural daylight and richer and warmer as the evening light changes. Paired with your choice of clear, frosted or opal glass, each combination produces a different quality of light and a different relationship between the ceramic and the room.
How It Works
The G9 lamp sits inside the glass shade, which determines how light behaves below the fitting. Clear glass gives the most focused, direct light downward with the blue earth ceramic clearly visible from the side. Frosted glass softens the spread and reduces glare, warming the overall feel of the room. Opal glass diffuses the light most evenly and disguises the bulb entirely, allowing the ceramic shade to read as a glowing object against the ceiling. At 21cm diameter and 15.5cm projection the fitting has a confident presence without being overpowering in average-sized rooms.

The Rivale Ceiling Light suits bedrooms, hallways, bathrooms adjacent to wet zones, landings and any room where ceiling height or practicality rules out a pendant drop. The blue earth finish adds a note of natural colour that lifts a ceiling without demanding attention — particularly effective in rooms with natural stone, pale timber, limewash plaster or warm neutral walls. Used as a pair either side of a bed it creates a considered alternative to bedside table lamps.
The Story Behind Mullan
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. Ceramicist Stephen Kieran developed the blue earth finish as a direct translation of the blues and greens of the Irish landscape into a hand-painted ceramic glaze. The studio employs over 100 craftspeople, exports to more than 55 countries, and makes every piece to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass.

FAQs
Which glass works best with the Blue Earth finish?
Clear glass shows the blue earth ceramic most vividly from the side and gives the most defined downward light. Opal glass turns the fitting into a softly glowing object and suits rooms where ambience matters more than directed light. Frosted sits between the two and works well in most situations. If you are unsure, opal is the most forgiving in bedrooms and hallways.
Will the colour look exactly like the photos?
The blue earth finish is hand applied in layers, so the exact depth and distribution of colour varies naturally between pieces. Your fitting will be tonally consistent with the photos but will have its own particular character — that variation is the nature of handmade ceramic.
Is this suitable for a bathroom?
The Rivale Ceiling Light is IP20 rated, which means it is suitable for dry indoor areas only. It is not certified for use within bathroom wet zones. If you need a bathroom-rated version please contact us and we can advise on alternatives.
Can I use a dimmable bulb?
Yes. The fitting is compatible with dimmable G9 LED bulbs — just make sure your dimmer switch is also rated for LED use. Bulb not included.

Yes — returns are accepted within 14 days of delivery provided the item is unused and in its original packaging. Please contact us to arrange.
