The Rivale Ceiling Light in Black Clay brings the deep, matte intensity of the black clay finish to a wall-mounted ceiling fitting — the form for spaces where a pendant drop is not an option but where a plain ceiling rose and shade would feel like a missed opportunity. The black clay ceramic sits close to the ceiling, its surface absorbing light rather than reflecting it, giving the fitting a quiet presence that reads very differently from anything painted or manufactured. Paired with clear, frosted or opal glass the character of the light shifts considerably, letting you tune the result to the room.
How It Works
The G9 lamp sits inside the glass shade. Clear glass gives a defined pool of downward light with the black clay ceramic reading boldly against the ceiling from the side. Frosted glass softens the spread into a warmer ambient glow, reducing contrast between the fitting and its surroundings. Opal glass diffuses the light most evenly and turns the fitting into a softly glowing object — the dark ceramic body against the lit white glass creating a striking contrast that works particularly well in rooms with pale walls. At 21cm diameter and 15.5cm projection the fitting has real presence without overwhelming a standard room.

The Story Behind Mullan
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. The black clay finish draws directly from the dark, iron-rich soils and ancient bog landscapes of that part of Ireland — a finish with a specific sense of place that manufactured alternatives cannot replicate. The studio employs over 100 craftspeople and exports to more than 55 countries, making every piece to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass.

Which glass works best with the Black Clay finish?
Opal glass creates the most striking contrast — the deep black ceramic against the evenly glowing white glass is particularly effective in rooms with pale walls. Clear glass keeps the look more graphic and direct, with the black ceramic reading boldly from the side. Frosted sits between the two and works well in most room types where a softer, warmer light is wanted.
Will my ceiling light look exactly like the photo?
Close but not identical. The black clay finish is hand applied and fired, which means the surface texture and depth of tone vary naturally from piece to piece. The photos are a reliable guide to the overall character but your piece will have its own surface quality.
Is this suitable for a bathroom?
The Rivale Ceiling Light is IP20 rated and suitable for dry indoor areas only — not certified for bathroom wet zones. Please contact us if you need a bathroom-rated fitting and we will advise on alternatives.
Can I use a dimmable bulb?
Yes. Compatible with dimmable G9 LED bulbs — ensure your dimmer switch is also rated for LED. Bulb not included.
Can I return it?
Yes — returns are accepted within 14 days of delivery provided the item is unused and in its original packaging. Please contact us to arrange.
