The Mullan Rivale Ceiling Light in Black Clay is a flush ceramic and glass ceiling fitting with the deep, matte quality of the black clay finish combined with a choice of glass shade that adds a further dimension of light quality and visual refinement. The ceramic shade is formed and hand painted at the studio in Mullan Village, County Monaghan, Ireland, with the black clay finish applied individually before firing, preserving the natural surface texture of the clay in the finished piece. Paired with clear, frosted or opal glass, the Rivale becomes a ceiling fitting with genuine visual complexity — the ceramic providing material depth and the glass controlling how the light is delivered into the room.
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village and built a ceramics studio that now employs over 100 craftspeople. The black clay finish draws from the dark, iron rich soils of County Monaghan, and the Rivale ceiling light format pairs this quality with glass shade options to create a flush fitting with greater light quality control than a ceramic shade alone can offer. Every piece is made entirely to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass, and the studio exports to more than 55 countries.
