Black Clay: A Sculptural Pendant With Material Authority
The Nakaii Pendant in Black Clay is a 20cm wide handmade ceramic pendant with the deep, matte authority of the black clay finish in a form that reads as genuinely sculptural on a ceiling. The black clay finish is applied by hand at Mullan Village, County Monaghan, and fired on site, preserving the natural surface texture and variation of the clay through the process. Suspended on 1m of cable, it has a confident presence above a dining table, kitchen island, bedside or in a hallway where a pendant of genuine material quality is wanted without the scale of a larger fitting.
How It Works
The open ceramic shade faces downward, directing the G9 bulb's light into the room. The black clay body absorbs rather than reflects, creating a warm, focused pool of light beneath the pendant with a characteristic glow at the ceramic rim. Compatible with dimmable G9 LED bulbs. Lower, warmer light levels bring out the natural surface texture of the black clay finish most clearly.

The Black Clay Nakaii suits dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways and living rooms where a pendant of genuine material character is wanted. The deep black clay finish sits confidently alongside pale walls and bright interiors as well as darker, more moody schemes. It pairs particularly well with antique brass, aged timber, dark stone and warm woven textiles. Group two or three above a kitchen island for a bold, considered scheme.
The Story Behind Mullan
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. The black clay finish draws from the iron rich soils and ancient bog landscapes of that part of Ireland. Over 100 craftspeople work at the studio and every piece is made to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass.

FAQs
What bulb does the Nakaii Pendant take?
It takes a G9 bulb, maximum 6.5W. Bulb not included. A warm white LED G9 suits the black clay finish well. A dimmable version gives full control over the mood in the room.
Will my pendant look exactly like the photo?
Close but not identical. The black clay finish is hand applied and fired, so surface texture and depth of tone vary naturally between pieces.
Can the cable length be adjusted?
The pendant is supplied with 1m of cable. Your electrician can adjust this during installation if a different hanging height is needed.
Can I use a dimmable bulb?
Yes. Compatible with dimmable G9 LED bulbs. Ensure your dimmer switch is rated for LED use. Bulb not included.
Can I return it?
No. Every Mullan light is made to order, so it cannot be returned unless it arrives faulty or damaged. If anything is wrong when it arrives, please contact us as soon as possible.
