The Manila Large Wall Light Scales Up the Adjustable Arm Design
Built on the same principle as the Manila Small Wall Light, this larger version carries a 30cm rattan shade at the end of a brass arm that extends from 45cm to 65cm in height and projects between 70cm and 90cm from the wall. The bigger shade gives the natural rattan weave more presence, making this a wall light that can genuinely stand in for a pendant or a floor lamp.
How It Works
The arm extends, retracts and angles, so the 30cm shade can be pulled well out into the room or tucked back close to the wall, and tilted to send light where it is actually wanted rather than straight down. A single E27 bulb sits inside, glowing out through the woven rattan for a warm, broken light, and the fitting dims smoothly when fitted with a dimmable bulb.
Where It Works Best
Its larger shade and generous reach suit living rooms either side of a sofa, a main bedroom in place of a table lamp, or a wide hallway where a single fitting needs to do the work of two. It is substantial enough to be used on its own as the main light source in a smaller room.
The Story Behind Mullan
Mike Treanor, an architect by training, founded Mullan Lighting in 2009 by restoring a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan, Ireland. From that single building, the studio has grown into a team of over 100 craftspeople exporting to more than 55 countries. The Manila Large Wall Light continues Mullan's exploration of natural, sustainable, biodegradable materials, translating a traditional rattan weave into a modern adjustable fitting.
