Red Iron: Earthy Warmth in a Sculptural Ceiling Light

The Kauri Ceiling Light in Red Iron combines the taller, more architectural profile of the Kauri range with the warm, earthy intensity of one of Mullan's most expressive finishes. At 20cm tall and 20cm wide it has a sculptural presence on the ceiling that flatter ceiling lights cannot achieve. The iron tones ranging from warm terracotta through to deeper rust and ochre are applied by hand at Mullan Village and fixed through firing, preserving natural variation from piece to piece. No two shades come out of the kiln looking identical.

How It Works

The open ceramic shade faces downward, directing the E27 bulb's light into the room. Without a glass shade the red iron ceramic does all the visual work, the earthy tones catching in the light differently throughout the day and responding most beautifully to the lower, warmer light levels of the evening. A warm white dimmable E27 LED is strongly recommended.

Where It Works Best

The Red Iron Kauri is a natural in dining rooms and kitchens where earthy warmth on the ceiling adds genuine character, in bedrooms where the terracotta tones create depth and comfort, and in hallways and living rooms where the richness of the finish adds visual interest overhead. Its taller form works particularly well in rooms with higher ceilings. It pairs particularly well with antique brass, aged timber, terracotta tiles, dark stone and warm woven textiles.

The Story Behind Mullan

Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. Ceramicist Stephen Kieran developed the red iron finish in direct response to the iron rich soils and weathered stone of the County Monaghan landscape. Over 100 craftspeople work at the studio and every piece is made to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass.

FAQs

What bulb does the Kauri Ceiling Light take?
It takes a standard E27 screw fit bulb, maximum 40W. Bulb not included. A warm white LED E27 is strongly recommended with the red iron finish. The warmer the colour temperature, the richer the terracotta and rust tones appear in the evening. A dimmable version lets you make the most of this.

Will my ceiling light look exactly like the photo?
Close but not identical. The red iron finish is hand applied and fired, so depth of colour and surface texture vary naturally between pieces. The tones will be consistent but the specific character of your piece will be its own.

Is this suitable for a bathroom?
The Kauri Ceiling Light is IP20 rated and suitable for dry indoor areas only. It is not certified for bathroom wet zones. Please contact us if you need a bathroom rated fitting and we will advise.

Can I use a dimmable bulb?
Yes. Compatible with dimmable E27 LED bulbs. Ensure your dimmer switch is rated for LED use. Bulb not included.

Can I return it?
No. Every Mullan light is made to order, so it cannot be returned unless it arrives faulty or damaged. If anything is wrong when it arrives, please contact us as soon as possible.
