Red Iron Ceramic with Warm Earthy Depth
The Ferox Pendant in Red Iron is a compact ceramic pendant, 15cm tall and 14cm wide, with a shade hand painted in tones that run from warm terracotta through to deeper rust and ochre. The red iron glaze is fired rather than simply applied, and the firing process brings out natural variation across the surface that cannot be fully controlled, which is exactly what gives every piece its individual character. In daylight the finish reads as warm and earthy, and under the glow of an evening bulb it deepens further, taking on a richer, more atmospheric tone.
How It Works
A glass shade beneath the ceramic body diffuses the G9 bulb's light into a soft, even glow, and as that light warms in the evening the red iron ceramic above deepens in tone rather than staying static. The fitting takes a single 6.5W G9 bulb, not supplied, and is dimmable when fitted with a dimmable bulb, allowing you to shift the pendant between a brighter task light and a warmer, moodier glow.
Where It Works Best
At 14cm wide the Ferox works best at a considered, smaller scale rather than as a single wide dining table pendant. A single fitting beside a bed, in a hallway or reading corner brings warmth and texture to a small space, while a cluster of two or three above a kitchen island at varying cable lengths lets the earthy tones read as a group. Red iron pairs particularly well with antique brass, dark timber, terracotta flooring and woven natural textiles.
The Story Behind Mullan
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. Ceramicist Stephen Kieran developed the red iron finish to reflect the iron rich soils and weathered stone found in the landscape surrounding the village. More than 100 craftspeople now work at the studio, shaping, painting and firing every piece entirely by hand, with finished lights made to order and exported to more than 55 countries.
