Clay fired with iron produces a finish unlike anything else in ceramics, and the Mullan Ferox Pendant in Red Iron is a perfect illustration of why. The shade is formed and hand painted in the ceramics studio at Mullan Village, County Monaghan, Ireland, with the red iron tones building from warm terracotta through to deeper, more complex ochre and rust within the surface of the glaze. The finish is never flat and never uniform, because the firing process and the hand application of the clay work together in ways that cannot be fully controlled or predicted, which is precisely what makes every piece so compelling. Each Ferox Red Iron pendant that leaves the kiln is genuinely one of a kind.
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor inside a restored 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, a settlement whose name carries the Irish word for mill at its root. The Red Iron finish was developed by ceramicist Stephen Kieran as part of a collection designed to reflect the colours and textures of the landscape surrounding the village, particularly the iron rich soils, aged stone and organic materials that characterise that part of County Monaghan. Today the studio employs over 100 people and distributes to more than 55 countries, with a reputation among architects and interior designers for producing handmade ceramic lighting of exceptional quality.
The Ferox Red Iron pendant is a natural above a dining table, where its earthy warmth creates exactly the kind of atmosphere that makes a meal feel like an occasion. It works equally well above a kitchen island with stone or timber worktops, in a living room where the natural tones tie into a palette of warm neutrals and natural materials, or in a bedroom where you want something with real character rather than a standard white shade. The red iron finish pairs particularly well with antique brass, dark timber, terracotta flooring and woven textiles.
