The Ferox Pendant in Matte White Striped is a compact ceramic pendant, 15cm tall and 14cm wide, with a hand painted striped pattern over a matte white ground. Where some of the Mullan ceramic finishes carry visual weight, this one reads as clean and graphic, closer to a line drawing than a solid block of colour. Each stripe is painted by hand at Mullan Village, County Monaghan, so the width and spacing vary slightly from piece to piece, and that small imperfection is what separates it from a printed or transferred pattern. At this scale, the fitting works as a precise, considered detail rather than a dominant feature.

How It Works

The glass shade beneath the ceramic body diffuses the light from the G9 bulb into a soft, even glow, while the matte white striped ceramic above stays legible even when lit, since the surface does not reflect light the way a glossy glaze would. The fitting takes a single 6.5W G9 bulb, not supplied, and is dimmable when fitted with a dimmable bulb, allowing the pendant to move between a bright task light and a softer accent glow.

At 14cm wide, the Ferox is built for a smaller footprint than a dining table centrepiece. A single pendant suits a bedside table in place of a lamp, or a reading corner and hallway where one graphic pendant does the job of a whole light fitting. Grouped in twos or threes at varying cable lengths above a kitchen island, the striping reads as a considered pattern rather than a repeated motif. The matte white striped finish is one of the most adaptable in the range and sits comfortably against most wall colours, natural textures and metal hardware finishes.

The Story Behind Mullan

Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan, and built a ceramics studio to bring the village's centuries old identity as a community of makers back to life. Ceramicist Stephen Kieran developed the studio's finishing techniques, including the fine hand painted striping used on this finish, drawing on the bleached stone and whitewashed plaster found throughout the village's historic buildings. Over 100 craftspeople now work at Mullan Village, and every piece is made entirely to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass, with finished lights exported to more than 55 countries.
