Marbled Ceramic with a Timeless Natural Pattern
The Ferox Pendant in Marbled finish is a compact ceramic pendant, 15cm tall and 14cm wide, with a shade painted by hand in soft cream, warm grey and stone tones. The marbling is worked into the surface individually on every piece, so the pattern shifts and settles differently each time, and no two Ferox Marbled pendants leave the studio looking quite the same. That natural variation is what gives the finish its lasting appeal. It reads as a considered, almost architectural material rather than a printed design, and it tends to look as good in ten years as it does on the day it is installed.
How It Works
Beneath the marbled ceramic body sits a glass shade, which diffuses the light from the G9 bulb into a soft, even glow rather than a hard point of brightness. The marbled surface above stays visible in profile even once lit, giving the fitting a quiet, sculptural quality whether it is switched on or off. It takes a single 6.5W G9 bulb, not supplied, and is dimmable when a dimmable bulb is used.
Where It Works Best
At 14cm wide, the Ferox suits a smaller, more considered placement rather than a single large pendant over a wide dining table. It works well beside a bed in place of a table lamp, in a hallway or reading corner as a single feature, or grouped in twos or threes above a kitchen island at staggered cable lengths. The marbled finish pairs naturally with stone worktops, pale timber and antique brass or satin brass hardware, and its neutral, natural palette means it sits easily in both contemporary and more traditional rooms.
The Story Behind Mullan
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan, into a working ceramics studio. Ceramicist Stephen Kieran developed the marbling technique used on this finish, drawing on the layered stone and mineral textures of the landscape surrounding the village. More than 100 craftspeople now work at the studio, shaping, painting and firing every piece by hand, with finished lights made entirely to order and exported to more than 55 countries.
