Blue Earth Ceramic That Shifts with the Light
The Ferox Pendant in Blue Earth is a compact ceramic pendant, 15cm tall and 14cm wide, hand painted in layered ocean and teal tones at Mullan Village, County Monaghan. The blue earth glaze is not a flat colour. In daylight it reads cooler and more aquatic, closer to the colour of open water, while in the warm light of an evening bulb the same surface deepens into richer, more mineral tones. Because every shade is painted individually by hand, the exact balance of those tones varies from piece to piece, so the pendant you receive carries a colour story that is genuinely its own.
How It Works
A glass shade sits beneath the ceramic body, diffusing the light from the G9 bulb into a soft, even glow rather than a hard point source. As the bulb warms up in the evening, the blue earth ceramic above takes on a richer, warmer cast than it shows in daylight, so the character of the pendant genuinely changes across the day. It takes a single 6.5W G9 bulb, not supplied, and is dimmable when a dimmable bulb is fitted.
Where It Works Best
At 14cm wide, the Ferox works best at a smaller scale rather than as a single pendant over a wide dining table. A single fitting beside a bed, in a reading corner or in a hallway lets the blue earth colour read clearly against a plain wall or ceiling. Grouped in twos or threes above a kitchen island, the colour variation between pieces becomes part of the appeal rather than something to avoid. Blue earth pairs particularly well with warm timber, natural stone, linen and brushed brass hardware.
The Story Behind Mullan
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. Blue earth is one of the original finishes in the ceramics collection, and ceramicist Stephen Kieran developed it to capture the dark greens and blues of the Irish landscape, its fields, rivers and coastal light, in a workable glaze. More than 100 craftspeople now work at the studio, and every piece is made entirely to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass, with finished lights reaching more than 55 countries.

FAQs
How big is the Ferox Pendant?
It measures 15cm in height and 14cm in width, with a 12cm ceiling rose and 1m of cable. It suits bedside, hallway or clustered kitchen island placement rather than a single large dining table fitting.
What bulb does it take?
A single 6.5W G9 bulb, not included. It is dimmable if a dimmable G9 bulb is fitted.
Does the blue earth colour change throughout the day?
Yes. In daylight it reads cooler and more aquatic, while warm evening bulb light draws out richer, deeper tones in the same glaze.
