Black Clay Ceramic with Real Depth and Quiet Presence
The Ferox Pendant in Black Clay is a compact ceramic pendant standing 15cm tall and 14cm wide, sized for close, considered lighting rather than a grand centrepiece. The ceramic shade is hand shaped and finished in a deep matte black clay glaze at Mullan Village, County Monaghan, with the natural variation of the fired clay giving the surface a quiet depth that a painted fitting cannot match. Black clay behaves differently from other Mullan finishes: rather than reflecting light back into the room, it absorbs it, so the ceramic body reads as a solid, grounded shape even while the glass shade beneath it glows. At this scale, that contrast between a dark, matte body and a lit glass shade gives the Ferox a presence that is out of proportion to its size.
How It Works
Light passes down through the glass shade fitted beneath the ceramic body, diffusing the glow from the G9 bulb rather than exposing it directly. The black clay ceramic surface above stays dark and matte even when the pendant is lit, so the visual effect is a warm pool of light beneath a solid, shadowed form. The fitting takes a single 6.5W G9 bulb, not supplied, and is dimmable when a dimmable bulb is fitted, so the intensity of that pool of light can be adjusted to suit the room.
Where It Works Best
At 14cm wide the Ferox is not a pendant built to anchor a large dining table on its own. It comes into its own at a smaller scale: a single pendant beside a bed in place of a table lamp, a cluster of two or three at staggered cable lengths above a kitchen island, or one fitting used alone in a hallway, reading corner or over a small side table. The black clay finish is one of the most adaptable in the range, sitting comfortably against pale plaster, dark joinery, warm timber and both brushed and polished brass hardware.
The Story Behind Mullan
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan, and built a ceramics studio inside it. Ceramicist Stephen Kieran developed the finishing techniques used across the collection, translating the tones of the surrounding landscape, in this case the deep, peaty darkness of the local soil, into a workable ceramic glaze. Over 100 craftspeople now work at the studio, shaping, painting and firing every piece by hand, and the finished lights are exported to more than 55 countries. Every Ferox is made entirely to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass.

FAQs
How big is the Ferox Pendant?
It measures 15cm in height and 14cm in width, with a 12cm ceiling rose and 1m of cable. It is a compact pendant, better suited to bedside, hallway or clustered kitchen island use than as a single large dining table fitting.
What bulb does it take?
A single 6.5W G9 bulb, not included. It is dimmable if a dimmable G9 bulb is fitted.
Is this suitable for a bathroom?
No. The Ferox Pendant is IP20 rated for dry indoor areas only.
Will the black clay finish look the same on every pendant?
Close, but not identical. Black clay is a hand applied glaze, so subtle variation in tone and texture between individual pieces is normal and part of its handmade character.
