Red Iron: Earthy Character That Earns Its Place on the Ceiling
The Bog Oak Ceiling Light in Red Iron is a 28cm handmade ceramic fitting with the warm, earthy intensity of one of Mullan's most expressive finishes. The iron tones range from warm terracotta at the surface through to deeper rust and ochre within the glaze, applied by hand at Mullan Village and fixed through firing in a process that preserves natural variation from piece to piece. No two shades come out of the kiln looking identical. The red iron finish responds beautifully to warm spectrum LED bulbs, deepening in colour and richness in the evening and making the ceiling feel genuinely warm and considered rather than purely functional.
How It Works
The open ceramic shade faces downward, directing the E27 bulb's light into the room while the red iron ceramic body sits against the ceiling with a warm, earthy presence. Without a glass shade the ceramic does all the visual work, the iron rich tones catching in the light differently throughout the day. A warm white dimmable E27 LED is particularly recommended with the red iron finish, the warmer colour temperature bringing out the deeper rust and ochre tones within the glaze and making the fitting feel alive in the evening.
Where It Works Best
The Red Iron Bog Oak is a natural in dining rooms and kitchens where earthy warmth in the ceiling adds genuine character to the room. In a bedroom the terracotta tones create depth and comfort. In a hallway or living room the richness of the finish adds visual interest to a transitional space. It pairs particularly well with antique brass, aged timber, terracotta tiles, dark stone and warm woven textiles. If your interior is built on natural materials and warmth, this is the ceiling light that belongs in it.
The Story Behind Mullan
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. Ceramicist Stephen Kieran developed the red iron finish in direct response to the iron rich soils and weathered stone of the County Monaghan landscape. Over 100 craftspeople work at the studio and every piece is made to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass. The studio distributes to more than 55 countries.

FAQs
What bulb does the Bog Oak Ceiling Light take?
It takes a standard E27 screw fit bulb, maximum 40W. Bulb not included. A warm white LED E27 is strongly recommended with the red iron finish. The warmer the colour temperature, the richer the terracotta and rust tones appear in the evening. A dimmable version lets you make the most of this.
Will my ceiling light look exactly like the photo?
Close but not identical. The red iron finish is hand applied and fired, so the depth of colour and surface texture vary naturally from piece to piece. The tones will be consistent but the specific character of your piece will be its own.
Is this suitable for a bathroom?
The Bog Oak Ceiling Light is IP20 rated and suitable for dry indoor areas only, not certified for bathroom wet zones. Please contact us if you need a bathroom rated fitting and we will advise.
Can I use a dimmable bulb?
Yes. Compatible with dimmable E27 LED bulbs. Ensure your dimmer switch is rated for LED use. Bulb not included.
Can I return it?
No. Every Mullan light is made to order, so it cannot be returned unless it arrives faulty or damaged. If anything is wrong when it arrives, please contact us as soon as possible.
