Blue Earth: Natural Colour That Transforms a Ceiling
The Bog Oak Ceiling Light in Blue Earth is a 28cm handmade ceramic fitting that brings a sweep of natural colour to a ceiling in a way that no manufactured light can replicate. The layered teal and ocean tones are hand applied at Mullan Village before firing, building up differently across every individual shade so no two pieces carry an identical depth or distribution of colour. In natural daylight the blue earth reads as cooler and more aquatic. In the evening with a warm E27 bulb beneath it, the deeper blues and greens within the glaze come forward and the fitting takes on a richness that makes a room feel genuinely considered.
How It Works
The open ceramic shade faces downward, directing the E27 bulb's light into the room while the blue earth ceramic body reads as a naturally coloured form against the ceiling. Without a glass shade the ceramic does all the visual work, the colour shifting with the quality of light around it throughout the day. Compatible with dimmable E27 bulbs, which gives full control over brightness and mood. A warm white LED is recommended to bring out the richer, deeper tones within the blue earth glaze in the evening.
Where It Works Best
The Blue Earth Bog Oak suits bedrooms, bathrooms adjacent to dry zones, hallways and living rooms where the ceiling should add natural colour and warmth rather than simply sit there. It is particularly effective in rooms with natural stone, pale limewash plaster, warm timber or cool neutral walls where the blue earth adds a note of landscape-inspired colour without imposing itself. A pair mounted either side of a bed creates a calm, layered bedside lighting arrangement that frees up surface space entirely.
The Story Behind Mullan
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. Ceramicist Stephen Kieran developed the blue earth finish as a direct translation of the blues and greens of the Irish landscape into a hand-painted ceramic glaze. Over 100 craftspeople work at the studio, every piece is made to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass, and the studio distributes to more than 55 countries.

FAQs
What bulb does the Bog Oak Ceiling Light take?
It takes a standard E27 screw-fit bulb, maximum 40W. Bulb not included. A warm white LED E27 is recommended. The warmer the colour temperature, the richer the blue earth tones appear in the evening. A dimmable version gives you full mood control.
Will the colour look exactly like the photos?
The blue earth finish is hand applied in layers, so the exact depth and distribution of colour varies naturally between pieces. The photos give a reliable guide to the overall tone but your piece will have its own particular quality of colour.
Is this suitable for a bathroom?
The Bog Oak Ceiling Light is IP20 rated and suitable for dry indoor areas only, not certified for bathroom wet zones. Please contact us if you need a bathroom-rated fitting and we will advise on alternatives.
Can I use a dimmable bulb?
Yes. Compatible with dimmable E27 LED bulbs. Ensure your dimmer switch is rated for LED use. Bulb not included.
Can I return it?
No. Every Mullan light is made to order, so it cannot be returned unless it arrives faulty or damaged. If anything is wrong when it arrives, please contact us as soon as possible.
