Black Clay: A Ceiling Light With Real Material Authority
The Bog Oak Ceiling Light in Black Clay is a substantial handmade ceramic fitting, 28cm across and close-mounted to the ceiling, that brings genuine material depth to a surface most lights treat as an afterthought. The black clay finish is hand applied at Mullan Village, County Monaghan, and fired on site, preserving the natural surface texture and subtle variation of the clay in the finished piece. Without a glass shade, the ceramic itself does all the visual work, absorbing light at the surface and concentrating the glow from the E27 bulb downward and outward into the room below.
How It Works
The open ceramic shade faces downward, directing the E27 bulb's light into the room while the black clay body reads as a strong, grounded form against the ceiling. Compatible with dimmable E27 bulbs, which is recommended. The black clay finish responds beautifully to warmer, lower light levels in the evening, the surface texture becoming more visible and the fitting more characterful as brightness dims. The 28cm diameter gives it a presence that works well in rooms of most sizes, and at 10cm projection it sits close enough to the ceiling to suit standard room heights.
Where It Works Best
The Black Clay Bog Oak is well suited to bedrooms, dining rooms, hallways and living rooms where a flush or semi-flush ceiling fitting is preferred and where the ceiling should earn its place in the room's design. The deep black clay finish is one of the most versatile in the Mullan range, sitting confidently alongside pale walls and bright interiors as well as darker, more moody schemes. It pairs particularly well with antique brass, aged timber, dark stone and warm woven textiles. A pair either side of a bed makes a considered and visually grounded alternative to pendant or bedside table lighting.
The Story Behind Mullan
Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by architect Mike Treanor, who restored a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan. The black clay finish draws directly from the iron-rich soils and ancient bog landscapes of that part of Ireland. The studio employs over 100 craftspeople, makes every piece to order using sustainable clay and recycled brass, and distributes to more than 55 countries.

FAQs
What bulb does the Bog Oak Ceiling Light take?
It takes a standard E27 screw-fit bulb, maximum 40W. The bulb is not included. We recommend a warm white LED E27 for the best results with the black clay finish. A dimmable version gives you full control over the mood in the room.
Will my ceiling light look exactly like the photo?
Close but not identical. The black clay finish is hand applied and fired, which means surface texture and depth of tone vary naturally between pieces. Your fitting will be tonally consistent with the photos but will have its own surface character. That variation is the point of handmade ceramic.
Is this suitable for a bathroom?
The Bog Oak Ceiling Light is IP20 rated and suitable for dry indoor areas only, not certified for bathroom wet zones. Please contact us if you need a bathroom-rated fitting and we will advise.
Can I use a dimmable bulb?
Yes. Compatible with dimmable E27 LED bulbs. Ensure your dimmer switch is also rated for LED use. Bulb not included.
Can I return it?
No. Every Mullan light is made to order, so it cannot be returned unless it arrives faulty or damaged. If anything is wrong when it arrives, please contact us as soon as possible.
