Standing 36cm high with a 58cm wide shade, the Betty Small Pendant pairs a slender brass frame with a shade woven entirely from abaca fibre. Abaca comes from a relative of the banana plant, prized for its strength and fine, closely woven texture, so the shade holds its shape while still letting light move through the natural weave. It hangs on 1m of cable, ready to be hung at the height that suits your space.

How It Works

Light from a single E27 bulb filters out through the woven abaca, softened and broken into a warm, textured glow rather than a single hard beam. The bulb is not included, so you can choose the tone that suits the room, and the fitting is dimmable when paired with a dimmable bulb, letting you take the light from a bright working level down to something quieter in the evening.

Where It Works Best

Its compact 58cm width makes the Betty Small at home above a round dining table, a breakfast bar or a kitchen island, and it works equally well as a single statement piece in a reading corner or hallway. Because the weave has such a natural, relaxed character, it suits rooms built around wood, linen and other organic textures.

The Story Behind Mullan

Mullan Lighting began in 2009, when architect Mike Treanor took on a derelict 19th century flax mill in Mullan Village, County Monaghan, Ireland, and turned it into a working studio. What started there has grown into a team of more than 100 craftspeople, sending lighting out to over 55 countries. Alongside its work in other materials, the studio has increasingly turned to natural, sustainable and biodegradable fibres like abaca, and the Betty Small Pendant is one result of that ongoing exploration.
