The Kriss cylinder pendant looks quiet from across the room and then rewards a closer look, with a slim brass coloured diffuser fanning out inside a smoked glass shade like the inside of a lampshade turned into the main event. It is a small fitting that punches well above its size.

This Kriss is finished in a warm bronze tinted glass, with a lined funnel shaped diffuser inside that catches the light in gold tones as it filters through. Mantra also makes the cylinder shade in a black tinted glass, sold separately, and a squircle shaped version exists in the wider Kriss range too if a softer outline suits your space better.

How It Works

A single GU10 lamp holder sits at the top of the shade, taking a bulb of up to 12W, with the 50mm reflector style GU10 being the natural fit for the fixture (bulb not included). Rather than shining straight down, the light is caught by the ribbed inner funnel and thrown outward through the bronze glass, so the shade itself becomes the visible light source rather than a lamp inside it.

At just 24cm across, this is a fitting built for a single drop rather than a big room filling statement, which is why Mantra pitches it at kitchens and dining spaces. It suits a spot over a kitchen island, a run of two or three spaced along a breakfast bar, or a single drop beside a dining table where you want a warm glass glow rather than flat downlight.

Mantra has been designing lighting in Valencia since 2000, building a reputation for pieces that look considerably more expensive than they are. In 2012, in house designer Santiago Sevillano launched the sculptural ORA collection, and that same appetite for treating glass and metal as sculpture rather than just a housing for a bulb shows up clearly in Kriss, where the ribbed diffuser is as much the design as the glass around it. The brand now sells into markets well beyond Spain, across Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, which is a reasonable proxy for how well a design like this has travelled.
