Kriss is built around a single idea: put something worth looking at inside a plain cylinder shade. Here that something is a tightly ribbed diffuser that fans out from a single lamp holder, catching the light in warm gold lines against dark glass.

This version of Kriss uses a black tinted glass cylinder with a matt black rod and ceiling rose, so the fitting reads as a solid, dark silhouette from across the room until it is switched on and the gold ribbed diffuser inside becomes visible. Mantra also makes this same shade in a warmer bronze tinted glass, sold separately, for a softer look.

How It Works

A single GU10 lamp holder sits at the top of the shade, taking a bulb of up to 12W, and the 50mm reflector style GU10 is the natural fit here (bulb not included). Light from the bulb is caught by the ribbed inner funnel and pushed outward through the black glass, so most of what you see is glow through the shade rather than a visible bulb.

Where It Works Best

At 24cm wide, this is a fitting for a single considered drop rather than a room filling centrepiece, which is why Mantra positions it for kitchens and dining spaces. It works well as a single pendant over a small table, or repeated in a row above a kitchen island or breakfast bar where the black glass will read as a stronger, more graphic shape than a paler finish would.
