Kandanchu is a small, rounded aluminium wall light built to sit flush against brick or render and throw its light downward in a soft wash rather than a hard beam. In sand black, it reads as a quiet architectural detail rather than a feature piece, doing its job by doorways and paths without drawing attention to itself in daylight.

Choosing Your Finish

This single light, round version is finished in sand black, a slightly textured matt black that resists showing fingerprints and weather marks better than a gloss surface. Mantra also produces Kandanchu in sand white, rust brown and anthracite, and in cube shaped as well as round bodies, with one or two light options, so the choice really comes down to matching your existing door furniture, brickwork or render colour.

How It Works

A single GU10 bulb, up to 10W and not supplied, sits behind a clear glass diffuser and casts light downward from the underside of the fitting. The aluminium body carries an IP54 rating, so it is built to cope with rain and damp outdoor air, and is wired to Class I, meaning it needs an earth connection, on a 100 to 240V supply.

Where It Works Best

At a compact 8cm high, 9.5cm wide and 7cm deep, Kandanchu suits spots where a large fitting would overwhelm the space, either side of a front door, along a passageway, or spaced out across a patio wall. Because it is a single downlight rather than an up and down design, it gives a more directional pool of light than Mantra's two light Kandanchu options, useful where you want to light a step or path rather than wash the whole wall.
