This particular Eve comes with a polished chrome frame and a black round shade in a lightly textured fabric, lined inside with a pale diffuser panel that softens the glow rather than letting it glare. How It Works

Three E27 lamp holders sit inside the shade, each rated to take a bulb of up to 20W, and LED GLS shaped bulbs are the natural fit here (bulbs are not included). The fabric drum diffuses the light sideways while the glass panel underneath spreads a softer pool of light below. The whole fitting is Class I wired, meaning it relies on an earthed electrical connection, and the drop is set by hand at the point of installation rather than fixed at the factory.

Where It Works Best

At 50cm across, the shade is large enough to read as a proper centrepiece rather than an afterthought, which is why Mantra positions this fitting for dining rooms and bedrooms in particular. Mantra was founded in Valencia in 2000 with a fairly simple aim: make lighting that looked designed rather than mass produced, without charging Flos or Artemide prices for it. Spanish designer Jose Ignacio Ballester joined the company in 2007 and has shaped a number of its collections since, and that same in house design thinking runs through pieces like Eve, where the arm is treated as a feature in its own right rather than just a means of holding a shade up. Yes. The cable is adjusted by hand when the light is installed, giving a drop of roughly 60cm up to a maximum of 150cm, so it can be set to suit a standard ceiling or something taller.
