A Pleated Shade, Pulled Into A Disc
Soleil, French for sun, is Philip Bro Ludvigsen's slim, disc shaped take on the pleated shade, hand folded but pulled almost flat rather than into a rounded bell, so it reads as a radiant disc rather than a drum. It was designed in 2020.
Oak and cord to match
The disc comes in light oak paired with a linen coloured cord, or smoked oak paired with a grey cord, and the shade itself in standard foil or paper.
How it works
Small measures 35cm in diameter and stands 5cm deep; Medium measures 50cm in diameter and stands 6cm deep. It comes with an integrated light source (not a replaceable bulb) and a ceiling canopy, hung on 300cm of round cord. We'd recommend a qualified electrician fits any hardwired ceiling pendant.
Where it works best
Its flat, wide profile suits a dining table or kitchen island where you want a strong, graphic silhouette without a deep drop below the ceiling.
Made by Le Klint
Le Klint's hand pleating technique dates back to around 1900, when P.V. Jensen-Klint folded a petroleum lamp shade by hand, taking his cue from Japanese paper folding. His son Tage Klint turned that craft into a company in 1943, and Esben Klint's 1942 Model 107 set the template for the hand pleated shades Le Klint still makes today in Odense, where new folders take about a year to learn the technique and two to three years to master it. Soleil, designed by Philip Bro Ludvigsen, carries that same hand pleating into a flatter, disc shaped shade, pulled taut rather than gathered into a bell.
Good to know
- Hand made to order in Odense; there's a lead time rather than stock on the shelf, so check current timing before you buy
- As with all our made to order Le Klint pieces, returns are only accepted if the item is faulty
- Supplied with its light source included; it is not dimmable on its own, and needs Le Klint's separate Casambi dimmer module (sold separately) if you want dimming
- 300cm of cord included, in linen (light oak) or grey (smoked oak), adjustable to a shorter drop
- Class II insulated and rated IP20, suited to dry indoor spaces, not bathrooms or humid rooms
- CE marked to European electrical standards
- Wipe the standard foil shade with a soft, dry cloth; the paper shade can be gently dusted with a soft brush
Questions People Ask
Can the Soleil pendant be dimmed?
Not with a standard dimmer switch. It needs Le Klint's separate Casambi dimmer module, sold separately, to dim the integrated light source.
What's the difference between the Small and Medium sizes?
Small measures 35cm in diameter and 5cm deep; Medium measures 50cm in diameter and 6cm deep.
Can the bulb be replaced?
No, Soleil has an integrated light source rather than a replaceable bulb, so it isn't designed for bulb changes.
