The Model 180 is Le Klint's own reworking of a piece of its history. Designed in house by the Klint Design Team in Odense, it brings together the rounded, enclosed form of Esben Klint's 1942 Model 107 with the proportions of the later Model 375, so the shade sits low and closed rather than open and flared. The result is a pendant that reads as quietly classic rather than of-the-moment, with the hand folding that has defined Le Klint lighting since the family began pleating shades in the early 1900s.
Finish and shade
The suspension and finial come in light oak, which keeps the wood pale and shows an open, straight grain, or smoked oak, which is fumed to a deeper, warmer brown that reads more formal against a dark wall. The shade itself is a separate choice. Standard foil is Le Klint's European lampshade material, a hard PVC that stays bright white, resists UV yellowing and is simple to wipe clean. Paper is made in Germany to Le Klint's own specification and has a softer, more tactile surface; expect it to mellow into a gentle golden patina with age rather than stay perfectly white.
How it works
Each shade is hand pleated in Le Klint's Odense workshop, then set onto the oak suspension so the fold pattern reads evenly from every angle. The pendant takes an E27 fitting with a maximum recommended 20W LED (bulb not included), and hangs at 35cm high by 33cm in diameter. It comes with 300cm of round, linen coloured cord, so there's plenty to work with on a high ceiling, and it can be shortened easily if you need a tighter drop. As with all Le Klint pendants, we'd recommend a qualified electrician fits any hardwired ceiling pendant.
Where it works best
Its closed, rounded shade gives a soft, glare free downlight, which suits it to dining tables, hallways and living areas where you want ambient light rather than a strong task beam. The oak and brass detailing pairs naturally with warm wood furniture and Scandinavian interiors, though the smoked oak option holds its own in darker, more contemporary rooms too.
Danish craft, three generations deep
Le Klint's pleating technique started around 1900, when architect P. V. Jensen-Klint folded a shade for a petroleum lamp to soften its glare. The company says the fold was inspired by Japanese origami, and it became a family craft refined over decades before Tage Klint formally founded Le Klint in 1943. That same folding method, still done by hand in Odense, is what shapes the Model 180's shade today.
