A Shade That Opens by Hand
Mutatio, Latin for transformation, is built around a single idea: a shade that opens and closes by hand, shifting from a fully closed matte black form to an open one that reveals a glossy white interior and a warmer spread of light. Designed by Christian Troels in 2013, Le Klint says the design won Best Design for Lighting at Denmark's 2014 Interior Design Awards in Copenhagen.
How it works
It stands 30cm high with an 8cm diameter, on an E14 fitting with a maximum recommended 7W LED (bulb not included), and runs from a flat, black mains cable to a plug. The shade itself opens and closes by hand, letting you adjust how much light escapes.

Its small scale and adjustable light suit a bedside table, a desk, or anywhere you want to dial the light up or down without a dimmer switch.

Made By Le Klint
Mutatio sits a little apart from Le Klint's pleated collections, but it comes from the same Odense workshop where paper and PVC shades have been hand folded since Tage Klint formally founded the company in 1943, building on his father P.V. Jensen-Klint's original petroleum lamp shade from around 1900, itself inspired by Japanese paper folding. Esben Klint's 1942 Model 107 set the template for that hand craft, and folders today still spend around a year learning it and two to three years mastering it. Christian Troels brought that same attention to detail to Mutatio in 2013, its hand operated shade going on to win Best Design for Lighting at Denmark's 2014 Interior Design Awards.
