The Smallest Highlight in Bronze

Caleo began life on Danish television, on the design competition show Denmark's Next Classic, where Rikke Frost won the 2019 series with the pendant that became Caleo. Its name comes from the Latin for "highlight," a nod to the bronze stringing that traces and emphasises the folds of the paper shade rather than hiding them.

The shade is hand pleated paper, made in Germany to Le Klint's specification, available on its own or with bronze coloured stringing that picks out the pleats in relief.

How it works

Caleo 1 is the smallest pendant in the range, standing 33cm high with a 24cm diameter, on an E27 fitting with a maximum recommended 20W LED (bulb not included), and hung on 300cm of round, linen coloured cord.

Its compact size suits a bedside, a reading nook or a smaller dining setting where you want the pleated silhouette without a large drop.

Made By Le Klint

Le Klint's hand pleated shades trace back to around 1900, when the architect P.V. Jensen-Klint folded a paper shade for a petroleum lamp to soften its glare, taking his cue from Japanese origami. The technique stayed within his family for decades before Tage Klint turned it into a company in 1943, and Esben Klint's Model 107 pendant of 1942 became the brand's founding classic. Every Le Klint shade, Caleo included, is still pleated by hand in the company's Odense workshop, where a new folder needs around a year just to learn the basic technique and two to three years more to master it across the full range of models.
