Karman Ugo Rilla Gorilla Wall Lamp - White

An old Hollywood gorilla, cast in ceramic

Ugo Rilla is Karman's tongue in cheek nod to classic monster movies: a gorilla's head mounted straight onto the wall, gripping three lamp cables in its fist as if it just wandered off a film set. Designed by Matteo Ugolini for Karman's eccentric Zoo collection, it sits somewhere between a working wall light and a piece of wall sculpture, and it's built to be noticed.

Matt white ceramic

This version is finished in matt white ceramic, with the gorilla's fur sculpted in high relief across the whole surface, so the ridges catch light and cast shadow differently depending on the angle and time of day, even before it's switched on. White keeps the piece tonally quiet against most wall colours, which means the sculptural form carries the drama rather than the finish, and it sits comfortably in a room where you don't want to introduce another strong colour.

How it works

Three fabric flex cables are gripped in the gorilla's clenched hand, each holding one E27 bulb, for three bulbs in total. Karman specifies a maximum of 10W per bulb if using LED, and recommends plastic, shatter resistant bulbs given how exposed the fitting is. Bulbs aren't included, so you'll need to source three E27 bulbs separately. It's a wall mounted fitting wired directly to the mains rather than a plug in lamp.

Where it works best

It wants a plain wall to stand out against: a hallway, a stairwell, above a console table, or a feature wall in a bar or restaurant with a bit of theatre in the brief. Because it's a strong single statement, it tends to work best alone rather than grouped with other decorative pieces nearby.

Karman and the Zoo collection

Ugo Rilla belongs to Karman's Zoo collection, a series of ceramic wall lights shaped as animal heads that the Italian brand is best known for internationally. Karman is based in Fossombrone, in Italy's Marche region, and describes its production as Italian made throughout.
