Karman Moby Dick IP44 Small Pendant - Matt White

A smaller whale, cast in fiberglass

Moby Dick takes the silhouette of a breaching whale and renders it in white fiberglass, smooth on the outside and left rough within so that light escapes unevenly rather than in a flat wash. Designed by Matteo Ugolini, this smaller edition keeps the same sculptural curve as its larger sibling, just scaled down.

The small size, IP44 rated

At 82cm long, this is the compact version of Moby Dick, sized for spaces the big pendant would overwhelm, and it's IP44 rated for use beyond a standard indoor room. IP44 rated, suitable for bathroom zones 2 and 3, or covered and sheltered outdoor areas, check local wiring regulations for your specific installation location, since IP44 protects against splashing rather than sustained rain or full outdoor exposure.

How it works

It's a ceiling mounted pendant that takes a single E27 bulb, compatible with incandescent, halogen or LED sources, rated up to a maximum of 20W to suit its IP44 wet location certification. It's a fixed, hardwired fitting, supplied ready to be wired in.

Where it works best

Its smaller scale suits an en suite bathroom, a covered porch, or a sheltered balcony where it won't be exposed to direct rain. It also works well above a bathroom vanity or in a smaller entrance hall with more modest ceiling height, wherever the full sized version would be too much fitting for the room.

Karman craftsmanship

Karman has been working with fiberglass, resin and other unconventional materials from its base in Fossombrone, in Italy's Marche region, since 2005, and Karman states its lighting is made entirely in Italy. This smaller IP44 edition of Moby Dick brings that same sculptural approach into bathrooms and covered outdoor corners.
