The bulldog that doubles as a wall light

Karman's Amsterdam takes the unmistakable jowly profile of a bulldog and casts it in ceramic, wall mounted with three lamp cables held loosely in its mouth like leads it's chewed through. Designed by Matteo Ugolini for Karman's Zoo collection, it's built to be looked at as much as switched on, a piece of characterful wall art that happens to throw light too.

Matt white ceramic

This version is finished in matt white, which softens the bulldog's expression and flattens the shadows across its jowls compared with a darker glaze, so it reads as a clean, sculptural object rather than a stark feature. White also gives it more flexibility: it sits comfortably against pale walls without disappearing, and works just as well as a quiet accent in a room built around colour or pattern elsewhere.

How it works

Three E27 bulbs, each rated to a maximum of 10W, sit inside the fixture with their cables gathered in the bulldog's mouth. Bulbs aren't included. It's wall mounted and wired directly into the mains, so it's a fixed fitting rather than a plug in lamp.

Where it works best

Amsterdam works well in a hallway, landing or living room where there's space to appreciate it at eye level, and it particularly suits anyone who wants lighting with a sense of humour rather than something that blends into the background. It's equally at home as a single statement piece or paired with its Zoo collection siblings for a full wall of ceramic heads.

Karman's Zoo collection

Amsterdam belongs to Karman's Zoo collection, a series of ceramic animal head wall and table lights designed largely by Matteo Ugolini, including the Ugo Rilla gorilla, Corrado bull, Cubano toucan, Marnìn deer, Ti-Vedo owl and Maoo cat. Karman states its pieces are made using entirely Italian materials and craftspeople, from raw ceramic through to the finished glaze.
