Karman Amsterdam Bulldog Wall Lamp - Matt Grey

A ceramic bulldog wall light with real presence

Amsterdam is Karman's affectionate nod to the Dutch capital's favourite dog: a bulldog's head in ceramic, mounted on the wall with three lamp cables bundled playfully in its mouth. Designed by Matteo Ugolini for Karman's Zoo collection, it's a piece that draws the eye as a sculpture first and a light source second.

Matt grey ceramic

This version is finished in matt grey ceramic, which gives the bulldog's jowls and wrinkles a bit more shadow and depth than a paler finish would, so the texture reads clearly even in daylight. Grey sits well against both light and darker walls, making it a flexible choice if you're not building the room around a single strong colour.

How it works

Three fabric flex cables, bundled in the bulldog's mouth, each take one E27 bulb, for three bulbs in total. Karman specifies a maximum of 10W per bulb if using LED, though incandescent and halogen E27 bulbs are also compatible. Bulbs aren't included. It's a wall mounted fitting, wired directly to the mains rather than plugged in.

Where it works best

It suits a wall with room to breathe around it: a hallway, a stairwell landing, above a sideboard, or a feature wall in a bar or restaurant that wants a bit of personality. As a strong single statement, it generally works best on its own rather than paired with other decorative wall pieces nearby.

Karman's Zoo collection

Amsterdam belongs to Karman's Zoo collection, the range of ceramic animal head wall lights the Italian brand is best known for internationally. Karman is based in Fossombrone, in Italy's Marche region, and describes its production as Italian made throughout.
