Astoria's handcrafted glass mix is shared across the range, so this floor lamp earns its place through how it directs light rather than how it looks. At 175.5cm, it stands taller than the standard Astoria Floor Lamp, and its uplighter format is a genuinely different job, background ambience rather than the more focused downward light of its sibling.

How It Works

A single E27 GLS lamp, up to 60W, sits within the fitting and is controlled by a foot switch built into the base, so there is no need to reach down or across the room to turn it on. Because the light bounces off the ceiling before reaching you, the effect is softer and more diffuse than a table lamp or downward facing floor lamp.

Where It Works Best

This is a lamp for a corner of a living room, hallway or bedroom where you want a wash of background light rather than a task light, and it works particularly well used alongside a table lamp providing the more focused light a room also needs. Compared with the standard Astoria Floor Lamp, it trades a shade you look at directly for light you feel more than see.

Interiors 1900 has produced handcrafted lighting since 1983, building on early Tiffany style lamps into ranges like Astoria that borrow from Art Deco design instead. The glasswork in this uplighter is hand mixed and bevelled in the same way as the rest of the range, so colour and texture vary in small, deliberate ways from one fitting to the next, the mark of a genuinely handmade piece. Four decades on, the company has expanded into brass and crystal lighting, though its Tiffany style ranges remain closest to where it started.
