A Bowl of Shifting Colour

Inverted, the Astoria shade becomes an open bowl rather than a closed dome, throwing light upward through the iridescent glass as well as down into the room. The deep blue trim around its edge is the detail that catches people out, appearing almost black from one angle and vividly blue from another as they walk past.

Choosing Your Astoria Fitting

Astoria's iridescent glass mix does not change across the range, so this pendant earns its place through its adjustable drop and open shade shape. It hangs on a chain adjustable between roughly 45cm and 68cm, less range than the 3 Light Pendant's long chain but with the shade facing upward rather than down, a genuinely different lighting effect rather than just a different size.

How It Works

Three E27 lamp holders sit within the inverted 48cm shade, each rated up to 60W and dimmable with a suitable LED lamp and compatible dimmer switch. At 3.5kg it is the heaviest of the Astoria ceiling fittings, reflecting the amount of glass used to build the open bowl shape, so it is worth checking your ceiling rose and fixing point can take the weight before installing.

Where It Works Best

The upward facing glass makes this pendant particularly effective over a dining table or in a living room where some of the light should bounce softly off the ceiling rather than shine straight down. Against the flush and semi flush Astoria fittings, which sit close to the ceiling, this is the version to choose when you want the pendant itself to be the room's centrepiece.

Interiors 1900 has handcrafted lighting since 1983, and the Astoria range is its answer to Art Deco design, angular and confident where its Tiffany originals lean toward Art Nouveau curves. The glass in this shade is mixed while molten and bevelled by hand, piece by piece, so colour and texture vary slightly between fittings, the mark of a genuinely handmade shade rather than a moulded one. The company's ranges have since broadened into solid brass and crystal lighting, but pieces like this remain rooted in that original glasswork.
