A Solid Stainless Steel Eyelid Step Light for Low Voltage Circuits
This is Hunza's Step Light Solid Eyelid in marine grade stainless steel, a recessed fitting with a solid metal eyelid hood cast over the lamp face. The hood curves down and forward so light spills across the step or path below it rather than shining back up at anyone walking past. Once installed it sits flush in its mounting canister, leaving just the brushed steel face showing.
Solid 316 Stainless Steel Eyelid
The flange and eyelid hood on this fitting are cast from marine grade 316 stainless steel, not plated onto another metal underneath, with a brushed finish and Hunza's small stamped H mark on the face. 316 grade is the specification Hunza uses where a fitting needs real resistance to corrosion, which is why it is rated for coastal and exposed sites. It can still pick up a light surface tarnish in some environments, and Hunza recommends regular washing to keep it looking its best.
How It Works
The eyelid hood covers around two thirds of the lamp face in a fixed position, so it cannot be aimed or adjusted after fitting. The shape does the work instead, directing light down and forward across a step tread or path while keeping the lamp itself out of direct view. The recessed body measures 63.5mm in diameter and 68.5mm in length, with a matching 63.5mm cut out. The visible flange is 88mm across and 7mm deep, and the eyelid adds a further 25mm of depth. It comes with a 1m cable ready to wire in.
This is the low voltage version of this solid eyelid step light, wired in parallel and run from a Hunza buriable transformer together with a Hunza approved MR16 LED lamp, both sold separately. If your project calls for a mains fitting instead, the same eyelid is also available as the GU10 mains version, which runs straight off the mains supply without a transformer.
Where It Works Best
- Recessed brick or stone steps near the coast or in exposed, salt laden air
- Fitted into retaining walls or low garden walls beside a path
- Marking a change in level on a patio, terrace or staircase
- Anywhere a cleaner, brighter metal look is wanted rather than copper or a painted finish
Our Own Installations
The in situ photographs on this page, showing the eyelid recessed into brick step risers, timber railway sleeper steps and curved garden walls, are Moonlight Design's own designs and installations. They are not stock imagery. They give a real sense of how this eyelid step light sits and lights a step or wall once fitted, rather than a studio shot on its own.

Questions People Ask
Is this solid stainless steel or just a plated finish?
It is a solid casting in marine grade 316 stainless steel, not a plated coating over another metal, which is why Hunza backs it with a 10 year warranty.
Is 316 stainless steel suitable for coastal sites?
Yes. 316 is the marine grade Hunza uses specifically for its resistance to salt air and corrosion, though it can still pick up a light surface tarnish and benefits from regular washing.
Can I adjust the direction of the light after it is fitted?
No. The eyelid hood is fixed in position and always throws light down and forward across the step or path, it is not an aimable fitting.
Do I need a transformer for this fitting?
Yes. This is the low voltage version, so it needs a Hunza buriable transformer and an approved MR16 LED lamp, both sold separately.
