A square edged eyelid step light in powder coated aluminium
This Hunza step light hides a low voltage MR16 lamp behind a solid metal eyelid hood, so the light falls onto the step or path below rather than into anyone's eyes. This square hood version sits inside a square backplate rather than the round flange of the standard Solid Eyelid, which reads as a slightly crisper, more architectural shape against square edged brick, render or contemporary paving.

The flange and eyelid are cast aluminium finished with a weatherproof powder coat, photographed here in black. Hunza also offers this fitting in white, dark grey, silver, olive green, brown and bronze powder coat finishes, so it can be matched to render, brick, timber or stone rather than standing out as an obvious fitting. As with any painted finish, treat the colour swatch as a guide. Actual colour can vary slightly by screen and by batch, and Moonlight Design can supply a physical swatch on request before you order.
How It Works
- The square flange is 88mm wide and 7mm deep, over a recessed body 63.5mm in diameter and 68.5mm long, needing a 63.5mm cut out.
- The eyelid projects 25mm and masks around two thirds of the lamp face, sending light down and forward across the step rather than straight ahead.
- Like all Hunza eyelid step lights, the direction is fixed rather than adjustable, which keeps the fitting flush and low profile once it's installed.
- This is the low voltage version, supplied with a 1m cable and wired in parallel. It needs a Hunza transformer and a Hunza approved 5W MR16 LED lamp, both sold separately.
- The same fitting is also available as a GU10 mains version if you'd rather avoid a transformer, and as a Pure LED version with an integrated LED chip. The standard round flange Solid Eyelid is also available in powder coat, if you'd prefer that profile.
Where It Works Best
- Steps, stair risers and stair stringers, particularly where you want the fitting to blend into painted or rendered brick rather than stand out in bare metal.
- Retaining walls and low garden walls flanking a path or drive.
- Any change in level that needs marking for safety after dark, from a single threshold step to a full flight.
- Projects where the square profile suits square set brick or block paving better than a round fitting.

We should be upfront that they show the round profile Hunza eyelid step light rather than this square hood version, as we haven't yet photographed one of our own square hood installations. The light output and fixing method are the same across both profiles, so the photos still give a fair sense of how an eyelid step light reads once it's recessed and lit at night.

Will the finish hold up in a coastal garden?
Powder coated aluminium copes well outdoors generally, but for a coastal or heavily salt exposed setting the marine grade 316 stainless steel version of this fitting is the tougher choice.
Is a transformer included?
No. This low voltage version needs a Hunza transformer and a Hunza approved MR16 LED lamp, both sold separately.
Can the direction of the light be adjusted after fitting?
No. The eyelid hood is fixed, so plan the orientation before you set the mounting canister in place.
