A square edged eyelid step light in marine grade stainless steel, wired straight to the mains
This is the GU10 mains version of Hunza's square hood eyelid step light. A solid metal eyelid hides the GU10 lamp and throws its light down onto the step or path below, wired straight to the mains with no transformer needed. The square backplate gives it a cleaner, more architectural line than the round flange on the standard Solid Eyelid.
316 stainless steel, built for coastal and hard wearing settings
The flange, eyelid and recessed body are machined from 316 marine grade stainless steel, finished with a brushed look, rather than a plated or coated surface. It's one of two true solid metal finishes Hunza offers on this fitting, alongside solid copper. Hunza notes that stainless steel can pick up a light surface tarnish in some environments, and recommends washing it occasionally to keep it looking its best, which is worth bearing in mind for a sheltered spot that doesn't get much natural rain.
How It Works
- The square flange is 88mm wide and 7mm deep, over a recessed body 63.5mm in diameter and 90mm long, needing a 63.5mm cut out. The body is a little longer than the low voltage version to house the GU10 lamp holder.
- The eyelid projects 25mm and masks around two thirds of the lamp face, directing light down and forward rather than glaring back at anyone on the stairs.
- The direction is fixed rather than adjustable, as with all Hunza eyelid step lights.
- This mains version wires straight in with no transformer or driver, and takes a Hunza approved 4W GU10 LED lamp, sold separately.
- The same fitting is also available as a low voltage MR16 version, and as a Pure LED version with an integrated, replaceable LED chip. The round flange Solid Eyelid is also available in stainless steel, if you'd prefer that profile.
Where It Works Best
- Coastal gardens and exposed sites, where 316 stainless steel copes better with salt air than most other finishes.
- Steps, stair risers and retaining walls where running mains cable is more practical than a transformer circuit.
- Any change of level that needs marking for safety after dark.
- Commercial and architectural schemes where a precise, square edge suits the design better than a round eyelid.
Our own installations
The in situ photographs on this page are genuinely Moonlight Design's own designs and installations, not stock photography. They show the round profile Hunza eyelid step light rather than this square hood GU10 version, as we don't yet have our own square hood installation shots. The fixing and light output are the same across both profiles, so they're a fair guide to how this style of fitting looks once it's recessed and lit at night.

Questions People Ask
Is this suitable for a coastal garden?
Yes. 316 stainless steel is a marine grade specifically chosen to cope with salt air, though Hunza recommends washing it occasionally to prevent surface tarnish.
Do I need a transformer?
No. This GU10 mains version wires straight to the mains supply.
Which lamp does it take?
A Hunza approved 4W GU10 LED lamp, sold separately, to keep the IP rating and warranty valid.
What's the difference between this and the low voltage version?
This version runs straight off the mains with a GU10 lamp and no transformer. The low voltage version uses an MR16 lamp and needs a Hunza transformer.
