A square edged eyelid step light in solid copper, wired straight to the mains
This is the GU10 mains version of Hunza's square hood eyelid step light. The solid metal eyelid hides a GU10 lamp from view and throws its light down onto the step or path below, with no transformer needed since it runs straight off the mains. Like the rest of this family it uses a square backplate rather than the round flange of the standard Solid Eyelid, giving it a slightly crisper line against square set brick, render or paving.
Solid copper, built to age with the garden
The flange, eyelid and recessed body are machined from solid copper rather than plated or coated. It's a natural finish, not a fixed colour, so the bright pinkish tone of a new fitting will soften into a warmer brown patina over its first year or two outdoors. Hunza lists solid copper as one of only two true solid metal finishes across its range, alongside 316 stainless steel.
How It Works
- The square flange is 88mm wide and 7mm deep, over a recessed body 63.5mm in diameter and 90mm long, needing a 63.5mm cut out. The body runs a little longer than the low voltage version to house the GU10 lamp holder.
- The eyelid projects 25mm and masks around two thirds of the lamp face, throwing light down and forward across the tread rather than glaring back up the stairs.
- As with all Hunza eyelid step lights, the direction is fixed rather than adjustable, keeping the fitting flush once it's set into its mounting canister.
- This mains version wires straight in with no transformer or driver, and takes a Hunza approved 4W GU10 LED lamp, sold separately.
- The same fitting is also available as a low voltage MR16 version for transformer fed schemes, and as a Pure LED version with an integrated LED chip. The standard round flange Solid Eyelid is also available in copper, if you'd prefer that profile.
Where It Works Best
- Steps and stair risers, especially where running a low voltage transformer circuit isn't practical and a straightforward mains feed is easier.
- Retaining walls and low garden walls beside a path or driveway.
- Marking any change in level safely, from a single step at an entrance to a full flight through a garden.
- Coastal or exposed gardens, since solid copper resists corrosion well outdoors.
Our own installations
The in situ photographs on this page are genuinely Moonlight Design's own designs and installations, not stock imagery. One shows a pair of Hunza eyelid step lights in copper set into brick step risers, giving a true sense of how solid copper looks and starts to patina once it's outdoors. We'll be upfront that the rest of these photos show the round profile eyelid step light rather than this square hood GU10 version, since we haven't yet photographed a square hood installation of our own.
Good to Know
- Usually ships within 2 to 3 days. If out of stock, allow 3 to 5 weeks.
- Returns accepted within 14 days if unused, uninstalled and in original packaging.
- No lamp is supplied. Fit a Hunza approved 4W GU10 LED lamp to keep the IP66 rating and warranty valid.
- No transformer is needed. This version is wired directly to the mains.
- Carries a 10 year warranty on the fitting.
- Moonlight Design recommends having all outdoor lighting installed and connected by a registered NICEIC electrician.
- Copper is a living finish and will darken naturally outdoors. This is normal and not a fault.
Questions People Ask
Do I need a transformer for this version?
No. This is the GU10 mains version, so it wires straight to the mains supply with no transformer or driver needed.
Which lamp does it take?
A Hunza approved 4W GU10 LED lamp, sold separately. Using a non approved lamp can affect the IP rating and warranty.
Why is the body slightly longer than the low voltage version?
It houses a GU10 lamp holder rather than an MR16 pin fitting, which needs a little more depth behind the eyelid.
Does the copper finish need any maintenance?
No maintenance is required. It will naturally darken to a warm brown patina over time outdoors, which is simply how solid copper ages.
