A square edged eyelid step light in solid copper
This Hunza step light uses a solid metal eyelid hood to shield a low voltage MR16 lamp from view while throwing its light down onto a step, path or wall base. Where the standard Hunza Solid Eyelid is built around a round flange, this square hood version sits inside a square backplate, giving it a crisper, more architectural line that suits contemporary brickwork, render and cut stone better than a round fitting can.
Solid copper, built to age with the garden
The flange, the domed eyelid and the recessed body are machined from solid copper, not plated or coated. Copper is a natural finish rather than a fixed colour, so expect the bright, pinkish tone of a new fitting to soften over the first year or two outdoors into a warmer brown patina. Hunza's own finish guide lists this as one of two true solid metal options in the range, alongside 316 stainless steel, and it is exactly that: solid metal through and through, not a plated flange on a different body.
How It Works
- The square flange measures 88mm wide and 7mm deep, with a recessed body 63.5mm in diameter and 68.5mm long, needing a 63.5mm cut out.
- The eyelid itself projects 25mm and masks roughly two thirds of the lamp face, so light is directed down and forward across the tread rather than glaring back up at anyone approaching.
- The direction of throw is fixed. There's no rotating or adjustable head on this fitting, which is typical of eyelid step lights and keeps the design flush and low profile.
- This is the low voltage version, supplied with a 1m cable and wired in parallel. It needs a Hunza transformer and a Hunza approved 5W MR16 LED lamp, both sold separately.
- The same fitting is also available as a GU10 mains version for installations without a transformer, and as a Pure LED version with an integrated, replaceable LED chip. If you'd prefer a round flange instead of this square one, the standard round Solid Eyelid is also available in copper.
Where It Works Best
- Recessed into brick, stone or masonry steps and stair risers to mark each tread at night.
- Set into retaining walls or low garden walls either side of a path, where the square line follows a squared off wall edge more naturally than a round fitting would.
- Anywhere a change of level needs lighting for safety, from a single step at a doorway to a full staircase through a garden.
- Coastal and exposed gardens, since solid copper resists corrosion well outdoors.
Our own installations
The in situ photographs on this page are genuine Moonlight Design work, our own designs and installations, not stock photography. One of them shows a pair of Hunza eyelid step lights in copper set into brick step risers, which gives a true sense of how the metal looks once it's outdoors and starting to develop its patina. We'll be honest that the rest of these installation photos show the round profile Hunza eyelid step light rather than this square hood version, since we haven't yet photographed a square hood installation of our own. The two share the same solid copper construction and light output, just with a different flange shape.
Good to Know
- Usually ships within 2 to 3 days. If out of stock, allow 3 to 5 weeks.
- Returns accepted within 14 days if the fitting is unused, uninstalled and in its original packaging.
- No lamp is supplied. Fit a Hunza approved 5W MR16 LED lamp to keep the IP66 rating and warranty valid.
- A Hunza transformer is required for this low voltage version and is sold separately.
- Carries a 10 year warranty on the fitting itself.
- Moonlight Design recommends having all outdoor lighting installed and connected by a registered NICEIC electrician.
- Copper is a living finish. Expect the colour to shift and darken over time outdoors, which is normal and not a fault.
Questions People Ask
Does the copper finish arrive already aged, or bright and new?
It arrives with the bright, pinkish look of new copper. It will darken naturally to a warmer brown patina over its first year or two outside, and there's nothing you need to do to encourage this.
Can I fit this into a canister that's already in the ground?
Yes, this fitting is designed to sit inside a standard Hunza mounting canister with a 63.5mm cut out, so it can go into an existing recess of that size.
Is a transformer included?
No. This is the low voltage version, so it needs a Hunza transformer and a Hunza approved MR16 LED lamp, both sold separately.
What's the difference between this and the round Solid Eyelid in copper?
They use the same solid copper construction, the same 5W MR16 lamp and the same light output. The only difference is the flange shape, square on this version rather than round.
