A Solid Copper Eyelid Step Light Wired Straight to the Mains
This is the GU10 mains version of Hunza's Step Light Solid Eyelid in copper, a recessed fitting with a solid metal eyelid hood cast over the lamp face. The hood curves down and forward so light spills across the step or path below it rather than shining back up at anyone walking past. Being a mains GU10 fitting, it runs straight off your household supply with no transformer to plan for.
Solid Copper Eyelid
The flange and eyelid hood on this fitting are cast from a single piece of solid copper, not plated or coated onto another metal underneath. Hunza gives it a smooth machined finish with no visible mounting holes, so the line of the fitting stays clean. The Hunza name is stamped discreetly into the lamp housing itself rather than the copper face. Copper is a natural finish, which means it will gradually darken and develop a patina outdoors rather than staying bright.
How It Works
The eyelid hood covers around two thirds of the lamp face in a fixed position, so it cannot be aimed or adjusted after fitting. The shape does the work instead, directing light down and forward across a step tread or path while keeping the lamp itself out of direct view. The recessed body measures 63.5mm in diameter and 90mm in length, longer than the low voltage version to house the GU10 lamp holder, with a 63.5mm cut out. The visible flange is 88mm across and 7mm deep, and the eyelid adds a further 25mm of depth.
Being mains voltage and wired in parallel, this recessed brick step light needs no transformer, just a Hunza approved GU10 LED lamp, sold separately. If your installation runs on a low voltage circuit instead, the same eyelid is also available as the standard low voltage version, which takes an MR16 lamp and a buriable transformer.
Where It Works Best
- Recessed into brick or masonry steps to light each tread
- Fitted into retaining walls or low garden walls beside a path
- Projects already wired for mains rather than a low voltage transformer circuit
- Marking a change in level on a patio, terrace or staircase
Our Own Installations
The in situ photographs on this page, showing the eyelid recessed into brick step risers, timber railway sleeper steps and curved garden walls, are Moonlight Design's own designs and installations. They are not stock imagery. One of them shows the copper finish fitted into a run of dark brick steps, which gives a genuine sense of how the copper reads once it is in the ground rather than in a studio shot.
Good to Know
- Usually ships within 2 to 3 days. If temporarily out of stock, allow 3 to 5 weeks for a fresh batch
- Returns accepted within 14 days if the fitting is unused, uninstalled and in its original packaging
- No bulb is supplied. A Hunza approved GU10 LED lamp must be used to keep the IP66 rating and warranty valid
- Mains voltage, no transformer or separate driver needed
- Solid copper is a natural finish and will weather and patina over time outdoors, this is expected rather than a fault
- Moonlight Design recommends installation by a registered NICEIC electrician
- Backed by Hunza's 10 year warranty
Questions People Ask
Does this GU10 version need a transformer like the low voltage model?
No. This is the mains version, so it wires straight into your mains supply and only needs a Hunza approved GU10 LED lamp, sold separately.
Is the eyelid solid copper all the way through?
Yes. The flange and eyelid hood are a solid copper casting rather than a copper plated coating.
Will the copper finish change colour over time?
Yes, this is normal. Copper left outdoors will darken and develop a patina rather than staying bright, and this is expected rather than a defect.
Is this the same body size as the low voltage copper version?
Almost. The recessed body is 90mm long on this GU10 mains version against 68.5mm on the low voltage version, to accommodate the GU10 lamp holder, though the visible flange and eyelid are the same size on both.
