A square edged eyelid step light in solid copper, with Hunza's integrated Pure LED engine
This is the Pure LED version of Hunza's square hood eyelid step light. Instead of taking a separate MR16 or GU10 lamp, it has Hunza's own Cree LED chip built into the fitting, still hidden from direct view behind the same solid metal eyelid hood that throws light down onto the step or path below. The square backplate gives it a crisper, more architectural line than the round flange used on the standard Solid Eyelid.
Solid copper, built to age with the garden
The flange, eyelid and recessed body are machined from solid copper rather than plated or coated. It's a natural finish, not a fixed colour, so the bright pinkish tone of a new fitting will soften into a warmer brown patina over its first year or two outdoors. Hunza lists solid copper as one of only two true solid metal finishes it offers, alongside 316 stainless steel.
How It Works
- The square flange is 88mm wide and 7mm deep, over a recessed body 63.5mm in diameter and 68.5mm long, needing a 63.5mm cut out. Supplied with a 1m cable.
- The eyelid projects 25mm and masks around two thirds of the lamp face, so light is thrown down and forward across the tread rather than back up at anyone approaching.
- The Cree LED chip runs at 600 lumens (6 watts) with a colour rendering index of 90+, and is genuinely user serviceable rather than sealed for life, so a specialist can replace the chip itself if it ever needs it rather than the whole fitting.
- It's rated IP67, a step up from the IP66 rating on Hunza's standard halogen ready and GU10 versions of this fitting.
- Pure LED fittings are wired in series rather than parallel, and need a remote LED driver rather than a simple transformer, sold separately. It's dimmable if a suitable dimmable driver is used.
- This fitting can be specified with a choice of colour temperature (2200K, 2700K, 3000K or 4000K) and beam angle (15°, 25°, 38° or 60°) at the time of order.
- The same fitting is also available with a conventional replaceable MR16 low voltage lamp or a GU10 mains lamp, if you'd rather not commit to an integrated LED engine. The round flange Solid Eyelid is also available in copper, if you'd prefer that profile.
Where It Works Best
- Steps, stair risers and retaining walls where a long life, low maintenance light source is preferred over a replaceable lamp.
- Coastal or exposed gardens, since solid copper resists corrosion well and the IP67 rating copes with heavy weather.
- Marking any change in level safely, from a single step to a full flight through a garden.
- Projects already using Hunza's Pure LED range elsewhere, for a consistent light quality and colour temperature throughout.
Our own installations
The in situ photographs on this page are genuinely Moonlight Design's own designs and installations, not stock photography. One shows a pair of Hunza eyelid step lights in copper set into brick step risers, which gives a true sense of how solid copper looks and starts to patina outdoors. We'll be upfront that the rest of these photos show the round profile eyelid step light rather than this square hood Pure LED version, since we haven't yet photographed a square hood installation of our own.
Good to Know
- Usually ships within 2 to 3 days. If out of stock, allow 3 to 5 weeks.
- Returns accepted within 14 days if unused, uninstalled and in original packaging.
- The Cree LED chip is built in, so there's no separate lamp to buy, but it does need a compatible remote LED driver, sold separately.
- Carries a 10 year warranty on the fitting and 5 years on the LED itself.
- Moonlight Design recommends having all outdoor lighting installed and connected by a registered NICEIC electrician.
- Copper is a living finish and will darken naturally outdoors. This is normal and not a fault.
Questions People Ask
Can I replace the LED myself if it fails?
The chip is serviceable rather than sealed for life, but this is a job for a qualified electrician rather than a DIY swap, given the fitting needs to come out of its recess.
Is this dimmable?
Yes, provided it's run from a suitable dimmable LED driver. It won't dim on a standard transformer.
What colour temperature does it come in?
You can specify 2200K, 2700K, 3000K or 4000K at the time of order, along with a beam angle of 15°, 25°, 38° or 60°.
How is this wired differently to the standard low voltage version?
Pure LED fittings are wired in series with a remote LED driver, rather than in parallel from a transformer like the halogen ready MR16 version.
