A Mains Powered Retrofit for Simpler Border Lighting
The PureLED Retro version of the Hunza Border Light runs straight off your mains lighting circuit, with no separate driver box to find room for. It is built for straightforward retrofitting, swapping out an older or less efficient border light without redesigning the wiring behind it, while still spreading the same wide, glare free light across path edges and planting.
Marine Grade Stainless Steel with a Factory Set LED
This version pairs 316 marine grade stainless steel with a Cree LED chip built into the fitting at the factory, rather than a separate bulb you fit yourself. The chip carries a CRI of 90 or above at 3000K, meaning it renders the true colour of foliage and stone more accurately than a lower quality LED, and it is available in four colour temperatures with a choice of clear or frosted lens.
How It Works
- Wires directly into your mains lighting circuit, with no separate driver required.
- The integrated Cree LED chip is field replaceable rather than a simple bulb swap, and outputs 120 lumens at 2 watts.
- Supplied as a fixed output fitting, so it is not dimmable.
- The head rotates 360 degrees and tilts from 0 to 90 degrees on a fully adjustable arm.
- Rated IP56/IP66 and backed by a 10 year warranty on the fitting, with the LED chip covered for 5 years.
Where It Works Best
Because it runs straight from the mains, this version suits gardens where a mains lighting circuit is already in place, such as replacing an ageing halogen border light with an efficient LED equivalent without opening up a new low voltage circuit. It works well lining a path, a driveway edge, or repeated along an avenue leading to a door or garden feature.
The photographs on this page are all taken from Moonlight Design's own projects, including a Border Light nestled among ornamental grasses and lavender beside a gravel path, showing the fitting doing exactly this kind of edging work after dark.
Designed and Made in New Zealand
Hunza has spent more than 30 years designing and hand assembling outdoor lighting in Auckland, New Zealand, according to the brand. Its PureLED range brings that same build quality to an integrated LED fitting, built to be serviced rather than thrown away when a chip eventually needs replacing.
Good to Know
- Supplied in 850mm only.
- The Cree LED chip is built in and field replaceable, so there is no separate bulb to buy.
- This fitting is fixed output and is not dimmable.
- Choose your colour temperature, 2200K, 2700K, 3000K or 4000K, and a clear or frosted lens at the point of purchase.
- Moonlight Design recommends that all outdoor lighting is installed by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
What does "Retro" mean on this Border Light?
Retro refers to the mains powered PureLED range, designed to run directly from an existing mains lighting circuit without a separate driver, so it can be fitted in place of an older border light without rewiring.
Can this light be dimmed?
No. The PureLED Retro is supplied as a fixed output fitting and is not dimmable.
Does it come with a bulb?
Yes. Unlike the standard Border Light, this version has a factory fitted, field replaceable Cree LED chip built in, so there is no separate bulb to buy or fit.
What colour temperature should I choose?
It's available in 2200K, 2700K, 3000K and 4000K, each with a choice of a clear or frosted lens, so the light can be matched to the rest of an existing outdoor lighting scheme.
How long is the warranty?
10 years on the fitting itself, with the integrated LED chip covered separately for 5 years.
