A driveway light that stays sharp in any weather
The Hunza Driveway Light in stainless steel is a recessed uplighter built to sit flush with a driveway, path or entrance court and take everything a British winter and a set of car tyres can throw at it. It takes a replaceable MR16 lamp on a low voltage circuit, part of Hunza's long running Driveway Lite range, hand assembled in New Zealand.
The stainless steel finish
The visible flange is machined from a 150mm rod of 316 marine grade stainless steel, the same specification used on boats and coastal architecture, and is fixed in place with three stainless steel anti vandal screws. It keeps a clean, consistent finish with minimal upkeep, though Hunza note that solid stainless steel can pick up a light surface tarnish in some environments, which regular washing keeps at bay. Below ground, the body of the fitting is cast from a high corrosion resistant aluminium alloy in a UV stable black powder coat, standard construction across the whole Driveway Lite range rather than a compromise. The steel gives you the finish, the aluminium body gives you a light, durable housing that can be driven over.
How It Works
The canister measures 114mm in diameter and 150mm in length, with a 148mm diameter flange sitting 20mm proud of the canister top, and you will need a 110mm cut out in the surface you are recessing it into. It arrives with a 1m cable, wired in parallel, ready to connect into your low voltage circuit. You will need a suitable Hunza buriable or wall mounted transformer, sized to your circuit and sold separately, plus a Hunza approved MR16 LED lamp in the beam angle you want. Sticking to Hunza approved lamps keeps the fitting within its IP66 rating and protects the warranty. The lamp holder rotates 360 degrees and tilts up to 20 degrees, so the beam can be aimed at a nearby tree or wall without lifting the fitting from its mounting canister. The same design is also available as a GU10 mains version if you would rather skip low voltage cabling, and as a Pure LED version with a sealed, integrated LED module.
Where It Works Best
This is first and foremost a light for driveways, paths and entrance courts. Recessed along the edge of a drive it throws a controlled beam upward onto a tree, a stone pillar, a garden wall or the house facade itself. Because it sits flush and is rated for vehicles up to 1500kg at speeds up to 10km/h, it also earns its keep in gravel turning circles and parking areas, where a stainless finish tends to suit a more contemporary scheme.
Our experience with Hunza
We have specified Hunza fittings in our garden lighting schemes since 2003, and the driveway light is one of the ones we come back to most often on projects with vehicle access to light. The photographs on this page, the lit gate, the avenue of uplit trees and the magnolia archway, are our own, from real projects we designed and installed, not stock imagery. That practical experience of how these fittings hold up once buried in gravel or set into stone is what shapes our recommendations.

Questions People Ask
Is the whole fitting stainless steel?
No. The visible flange is 316 marine grade stainless steel, fixed to a body cast from black powder coated aluminium alloy. This is standard construction across Hunza's Driveway Lite range and has no effect on the IP66 rating.
Will the stainless steel tarnish?
It can pick up a light surface tarnish in some settings, particularly near the coast, but this is cosmetic and washes off with regular cleaning.
Can I drive over this light?
Yes, it is rated for vehicles up to 1500kg at speeds up to 10km/h, which covers a car or light van crossing at a sensible pace.
What lamp and transformer do I need?
A Hunza approved MR16 LED lamp and a separate Hunza buriable or wall mounted transformer sized to your circuit. Neither is supplied with the fitting.
Is there a mains version?
Yes, the same fitting is available as a GU10 mains version, and as a Pure LED version with a sealed, non replaceable lamp module.
