A driveway light built to disappear by day and glow by night
The Hunza Driveway Light in solid bronze is a recessed uplighter designed to sit flush with the surface of a driveway, entrance court or path and be driven over without a second thought. It is part of Hunza's long running Driveway Lite range, hand assembled in New Zealand, and this version takes a replaceable MR16 lamp and runs on a low voltage circuit, giving you full control over beam angle and brightness from one compact fitting.
The solid bronze finish
The face you see and touch is solid bronze, machined from a 150mm bronze bar and fixed to the fitting with three stainless steel anti vandal screws. Left to the weather, that bronze will slowly darken and develop a soft patina, the kind of ageing that most people choose bronze for in the first place. Below ground, the body of the fitting is cast from a high corrosion resistant aluminium alloy and finished in a UV stable black powder coat. That is standard Hunza construction across the whole Driveway Lite range and is not a downgrade. It is what keeps the fitting light enough to install easily and tough enough to survive being driven over, while the bronze does the job of looking and ageing beautifully.
How It Works
The canister measures 114mm in diameter and 150mm in length, with a 148mm diameter flange sitting 20mm proud of the canister top, and a 110mm cut out is needed in the surface you are recessing it into. It arrives with a 1m cable ready to wire into your low voltage circuit, wired in parallel. You will need a suitable Hunza buriable or wall mounted transformer, sized to your circuit, which is sold separately, along with a Hunza approved MR16 LED lamp in the beam angle of your choice. Only Hunza approved lamps should be fitted, as this keeps the fitting within its IP66 rating and protects the warranty. The lamp holder rotates a full 360 degrees and tilts up to 20 degrees, so you can angle the beam at a nearby tree or wall without lifting the fitting out of its mounting canister. If you would rather avoid low voltage cabling altogether, the same design is also available as a GU10 mains version, and as a Pure LED version with a sealed, integrated LED module that never needs a lamp change.
Where It Works Best
This is a driveway and path light first and foremost. Set along the edge of a drive or across an entrance court, it throws a controlled beam upward onto whatever you point it at, a mature tree, a stone pillar, a garden wall or the front of the house itself. Because it sits flush and is rated to be driven over at up to 10km/h and 1500kg, it also works well set into gravel turning circles, parking areas and the odd spot where a taller fitting simply is not practical.
Our experience with Hunza
We have been specifying Hunza fittings in our garden lighting schemes since 2003, and the driveway light is one we return to on almost every project with vehicle access to light. The photographs of the wrought iron gate, the avenue of uplit trees and the magnolia archway on this page are our own, taken on real schemes we designed and installed, not stock photography. It is that hands on experience with how these fittings actually perform once buried in gravel or set into stone that shapes what we recommend.

Questions People Ask
Is the whole fitting solid bronze?
No. The visible flange is solid bronze bar, fixed with stainless steel screws to a body cast from black powder coated aluminium alloy. This is the standard construction across Hunza's Driveway Lite range and does not affect the fitting's IP66 rating or performance.
Can cars actually drive over it?
Yes. The fitting is rated for vehicles up to 1500kg travelling at up to 10km/h, which covers a car or light van crossing a driveway at a sensible speed.
Does it come with a transformer?
No. You will need a separate Hunza buriable or wall mounted transformer sized to the number of fittings on your circuit.
What lamp does it take?
A Hunza approved MR16 LED lamp in your choice of beam angle, sold separately. Using a non approved lamp can affect the IP rating and warranty.
Is there a mains powered version?
Yes. The same fitting is available as a GU10 mains version for anyone who would rather avoid low voltage transformers, as well as a Pure LED version with a sealed, non replaceable lamp.
