A Border Light Cast in Solid Bronze and Copper
This version of the Hunza Border Light is made from uncoated solid bronze and copper rather than a painted or steel finish, so it ages the way garden metalwork always has, darkening and developing character over the years instead of staying static. It still throws the same wide, sideways spread of light that keeps a border or path lit without any glare or upward spill.
Solid Bronze and Copper
Left unlacquered, copper and bronze react naturally to air and moisture, moving from a bright metallic tone toward a deeper, darker patina over time. This is expected and not a fault. It is the same natural weathering you would see on an old copper gutter or a bronze door handle, and it tends to suit period gardens, brick and stone settings particularly well.
How It Works
- The head sits on a fully adjustable arm, rotating 360 degrees and tilting from 0 to 90 degrees, so the beam can be aimed precisely.
- Runs on a low voltage system, wired in parallel, and requires a Hunza buriable transformer.
- Takes a G4 capsule LED, which is not included and must be purchased separately.
- Supplied with a 1m cable and a frosted glass lens to reduce glare.
- Rated IP66 and backed by a 10 year warranty on the fitting.
Where It Works Best
The warm, aging tone of bronze and copper suits traditional or period gardens especially well, sitting comfortably against brick paths, stone steps and established planting where a bright steel or painted finish would look out of place. It works both as a single accent light and repeated along a run of border or path.
The photographs on this page are all taken from Moonlight Design's own projects, including a Border Light lighting evergreen shrubs beside a set of stone steps at night, which gives a real sense of the tone and spread this fitting produces once installed.
Designed and Made in New Zealand
Hunza has been hand assembling outdoor lighting in Auckland, New Zealand for more than 30 years, according to the brand, and its solid bronze and copper fittings are built with the expectation that they will be left outdoors permanently and allowed to age naturally rather than being polished to stay bright.
Good to Know
- Supplied as 850mm as standard. The 400mm length is made to order and is non returnable.
- The solid bronze and copper finish will darken and patina naturally with weather exposure. This is normal and does not need to be prevented or polished away.
- This fitting is not supplied with a bulb. It requires a G4 capsule LED, purchased separately.
- To maintain the IP66 rating and the 10 year warranty, a Hunza approved LED must be used.
- Requires a Hunza approved buriable transformer, which is not included.
- Moonlight Design recommends that all outdoor lighting is installed by a registered NICEIC electrician.
Questions People Ask
Will the bronze and copper finish change colour over time?
Yes, both metals are supplied uncoated and will darken and develop a natural patina with weather exposure. This is expected and is part of the finish rather than a fault, and no polishing is needed to prevent it.
Does it come with a bulb?
No, it is supplied without a bulb. It takes a G4 capsule LED, which must be bought separately and needs to be Hunza approved to preserve the IP66 rating and warranty.
What length should I choose?
The 850mm pole is supplied as standard and suits taller planting, while the 400mm option sits lower for edging low borders and is made to order.
Is this suitable for permanent outdoor installation?
Yes, it carries an IP66 rating and is backed by a 10 year warranty, so it is designed to be installed permanently outdoors and left to weather naturally.
Does the finish need any maintenance?
No. The ageing process is a normal part of solid bronze and copper and does not require polishing, sealing or any other maintenance to keep the fitting working properly.
