Bigger and rounder than its Humble One and Two siblings, Bug has a curved, sculptural shade sitting on a substantial battery filled base, making it as much a piece to look at as to switch on. This gold finish gives it a polished, warm presence on a desk, console or side table.

Gold catches whatever light is nearby and gives Bug a more formal, dressed up look than the softer beige version or the graphic black one. It suits a study desk or a living room console where the lamp itself is meant to be noticed, not just the light it gives off.

How It Works

Bug runs on a rechargeable battery, topped up on a Qi wireless dock or via the included USB-C cable, 4 to 6 hours for up to 90 hours of light. Three modes are built in, candle, ambiance and work, covering everything from a flickering low glow to genuine task lighting. Built from aluminium and polycarbonate with silicone seals, it carries an IP65 rating and measures Ø3.9 x H11.3 inches. Zigbee 3.0 connectivity also lets it pair with Philips Hue, IKEA Tradfri or Tuya smart systems through a compatible bridge, so it can join a phone, voice or motion controlled setup alongside its own onboard controls.

Humble was founded in Amsterdam in 2018 by Jorren Teertstra and fellow Dutch industrial design engineers Gert, Tom, Lenny and Douwe, built around the idea of a wireless alternative to candlelight. Bug pushes that idea further than their first lamp, the Humble One, adding smart home connectivity to the same cordless principle.

Do I need a bridge to use the smart features? Yes, a compatible Zigbee bridge such as a Hue or Tradfri hub is needed to control Bug through an app, voice assistant or motion sensor, without one it still works normally using its onboard controls.

What is the difference between the three modes? Candle gives a flickering, low intensity glow, ambiance is a steady warm light for evenings, and work is the brightest setting, suited to actual desk tasks.

Can it be controlled without any smart home system at all? Yes, all three modes are accessible directly from the lamp itself, the Zigbee connectivity is an optional extra rather than a requirement.
